Playing as Egypt as discussed elsewhere and with lots of help from this forum managed to fend off the Mongols, win back all the settlements they had taken from me and "put them to flight", as the message said. But I can't go through it now with the Timurids. It's all just too much for me. Even if I could put the Timurids to flight, I wouldn't have nearly enough turns left to capture the remaining settlements I need to win. Boo hoo.

Of course you do. Make sure you have ballista towers in Jerusalem/Antioch/possible Edessa/Baghdad/Cairo and spam saracen militia and desert archers. Use your cavalry in Turkey so you have land to fall back on while keeping them away from the horsemen. When you face elepants, use Desert Cavalry. Artillery, Kurdish Javelinmen and elephant mercs work too but desert cav are the most economic.

Just fortify your settlements with some improved towers and all the troops you can afford, and let the Timurids come.
It doesn´t matter if you run out of turns, you can still choose to continue playing afterward.

Achieving victory conditions just shows you a somewhat crappy video (unless you've never won a campaign before/modded the files to unlock all the factions). The real fun is in the game. Fight the Timurids until you win, lose, or get sick of fighting them. If you feel like watching a campaign victory video, check YouTube. I couldn't find an Egyptian one, but they're all pretty similar. If you have the Timurids on the run by 1530 and no other faction matches you, but you haven't quite conquered enough territories, that's still an achievement, even if the computer doesn't call it a victory.
