Default CA! Update on the engines's optimisation!

Whilst talk of factions etc and gamepley is all great some of us want to know what kind of changes are being done to address the poor cpu optimisation that total wars have been suffering from?

I have actually raised this issue for several yrs in fact i think i first spotted it over 4 yrs ago. I actually built by first PC specially for total wars so am rather experienced in this field.

That said it would be nice if we knew of any updates....so far i hear nothing.

After all the warscape engine isnt a spring chicken!

If the follow in a similar vein to Shogun 2 they can't go too wrong. That was really good for me.

And my PC is a toaster tied up to Gameboy Advance SP.

u need a pc perf + total war reality check my friend. i'll be happy to oblidge.

let's just leave it as fact that there is a serious issue. i.e zooming in on melee fights and a serious fps loss, i am not making this up have studied it for yrs and tested on lots of different setups.

back in the day i rem rome being new and then building especially for medieval total war, since then i have learnt a lot and am now on a water cooled setup and played countless titles.

S2TW ran better than NTW for me on the same settings.

    Magic.

are you saying that it is the French's fault?

    que?

without giving offene to any future posters i am beyond (and maybe others) the stage of "i dont care about this or my pc runs it's great" ect type comments. was actually addressing CA themselves...

so dont get annoyed if i am rather short handed with u. personal things like "well it runs ok for me" arent at all in my interest (unless u want me to help u improve your overall pc performance which i am very happy to help u do).

    so there's a Caveat for u!

lol I was speaking Sharpe who said he had problems with NTW (french TW) vs the japanese version of the game.

Bloody French. This is all Bonaparte's fault.

Performance loss when zooming in at battle is a natural progression due to the increase in model details (vertex count). Not sure if the same principle still exists in the later games, but in M2 you had three different LOD models that got used according to viewing distance.

ahh while am here i'll answer this. as model detail goes up and as the cpu is doing the animations it makes for the engine to be better optimised to take advantage of more cpu grunt we now have or in other words more use of cores.

the fact we see fps issues when zoomed in is either the cpu or gpu not being well optimised enough to take the extra performance hog this creates. because of the nature of total wars and the fact there's a lot going on on screen it would make sense to me to concentrate more on this aspect of the engine.

it has been proved so far by benches and tests done by users (on this forum) that the warscape engine is a bit of a shiny turd (i.e looks good but with low cpu core optimisation).

so whilst probably the majority of people might be wowed by what they see, some of us know that looks arent everything.

i might add though that others games arent perfect but lets take bf3 for example...whilst this might have some fps dips in big fights with lots of people on the server you'll find this isnt extreme enough or detrimental to gameplay/fun and if it's really bad you know you need a better cpu/gpu.

atm even high end rigs are suffering from perf issue with total wars. it's a shame as i wouldnt mind upgrading my gpu just for a better experience with a total war but am loathe to do it simply because i know i'll still get average/poor perf with total wars and the current state of the engine.

I don't wanna make a whole new thread to ask this so....

Would it be silly to buy an iMac with these specs:
    21.5-inch: 2.7GHz

    • 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    • Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
    • 8GB (two 4GB) memory
    • 1TB hard drive1
    • NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M with 512MB

If I wanted to play Rome II on the highest or at least rather high settings... by your informed estimates ????

    Yes

I'm not an expert on these things but my laptop has similar specs and can just run Shogun 2 on high. CA have stated that the minimum specs needed for Rome will remain the same as Shogun

yes, if you want to do proper gaming on a mac you have some options

    1) get the rmbp 13, get a desktop gpu, hook it up via thunderbolt
    2) get the imac 27 and put the 680mx in it

those 2 can give you the best performance, there is also the imac 21 and the rmbp 15 with the 640m/650m, which are average mid range gpus

    it still happens

but I think his point is about the cpu utilization issues that people have, he wanted/s proper multi core support, that simply needs a new engine

Same as Shogun 2 I think, I'll just wait for Haswell..

Haswell wont make much difference if they dont further optimize multicore over Shogun 2.Haswell early samples are out and as usual it is a up to 15% performance gain.15% is not very much when the CPU benchmark of Shogun 2 shows how much it relies on single core prowess over lots of threads.AMD gets murdered due to this.Check out the benchmarks below to see a 4 core non HT CPU beat the most expensive six core HT cpu by intel due to clock speed.

Shogun 2: Total War CPU Test
1,920 x 1,080, default settings, no AA, no AF

    Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition (4.7GHz) 30min 38 avg

Forget 60FPS in melee the most u can hope for is 30.I cannot even get 5GHZ and ive been tweaking for months.4800mhz gives 80C temps where as if they optimized it i could run at lower clocks and lower temps and get the same or more fps.

actually if you are upgrading for something I would wait for haswell, its right around the corner, 5-15% over ivy, so you are upgrading from lets say core 2 duo, that would be worth it

    Yes it needs multicore support.

Maybe you can explain to me why my GTS 8800 cant use directx 11 and my units on Shogun2 are all blurred like it was MTW 1 .
My GTX 580 went to the factory to fix .
On RTW i have perfect grafics but with Shogun 2,NTW it seems i have grafics of 10 years ago.
