Default Best commander in Westeros history!!!

OK, I am simply asking who is better, purely on the battlefield!

I don't care who you say!

I think it has to be Tristifer the Fourth, although we only know barely anything about him.... 100 battles and he only lost one? That is really impressive.

As for in the books time period.... I am going to have to go with Tarly (not samwell )

    So what do you think

    I will upload a poll!

Nevermind the forum did not let me

I'm going to say in Westeros mods not the books

    1) has to be Tristifer IV I think, tho Stannis is pretty damn close, with 9 command but has +20 movement which is damn important and also line of sight bonus which is kinda nice

    2) well, Stannis

    3) Daemon, the King who bore the sword . Lots of command

    4) Drogo in FaB I think. Tied with Dayne in Korah I think

    5) Uhm... Tywin in Enhanced maybe? Nah, I would have to say Prince Talon in Korah, has +30 movement and 7 command I think

    6) this is where it gets tricky, lots of generals which are pretty much alike. Tywin Lannister, Kevan Lannister, Jaime Lannister, Lancel Lannister (in Korah) Prince Kevan (in Korah) Domeric Bolton, Roose Bolton, Beron Stark, Brandon Stark, Robb Stark, Alesander Durrendon, Broze Yohn, the Blackfish, Randyll Tarly, Oberyn Martell, Axell Gardener, Martin Gardener, OH SO MANY MORE I CAN'T WRITE THEM ALL!!

Brynden the Blackfish. He trumps all.

Tristifer the Fourth most likely, in terms of the times within ASOIAF, either the Blackfish (Catelyn even admits he always had a part in Robb's victories) Or maybe Randyll Tarly.
However outside the battlefield Tywin brings cunning as well, he showed that even though his forces may have been losing their battles(he wasn't commanding those loses though) He could still win the war, so if I had to choose someone to have leading, it would be him, with Tristifer as his sword.

In the book saga it would have to be either the Blackfish or Randyl Tarly.
In the mods has to be Tristifer IV.
Myself being a stark fan boy would put in a word for Robb Stark having never lost a battle, But granted did have the influence of the Blackfish behind him.
Also a quick question generally members of the kingsguard are great fighters are there any examples of those who were Great Commanders?

In Westeros history, from what we know, it would have to be the Hammer of Justice. During the books timeframe, I'd have to say Tywin Lannister, with the Blackfish & Tarly being a close second/third

Tristiffer Mudd the fourth, Aegon the Dragon , Daemon Blackfyre, Stannis Baratheon , Randyll Tarly.
Those are my types. I would say Robb Stark too but he
owed a lot to his bannermen

Tristifer IV: Anyone who wins ninety nine battles in a row and needs four kings to team up to defeat him is clearly a good commander. The fact that right after he died his kingdom fell shows it was him holding the Riverlands together as an indipendant region.

Randyll Tarly: The only man to defeat Robert Baratheon in battle and capable of scaring even Brienne the Beauty.

Quntyn Ball: A prominent commander in the Blackfyre Rebellion, he defeated and killed Lord Lefford at Lannisport and then routed Lord Damon Lannister when he came out of Casterly Rock to confront him.

Tywin Lannister: While he is probably not the best commander in the field, he is still consider a great general and his ability to win wars off the field proves him to be one pof the most dangerous leaders.

There are some arguments to be made of Robert Baratheon but I feel he is not a particularly great commander, he seems more like a man to lead from the front and gnore the great picture, hoping to smash his enemies with brute force instead. THis could explain why he suffered a defeat at the hands of the Reach van. It even states at one poiint that his army was close to breaking at the Trident until he kills Rhaegar.

1st: I have to say Tristifer IV of course, but maybe his victories could have been exagerated. He won a hundred battles and in the last one he died, just amazing.

2nd: Tywin Lannister / Stannis Baratheon, for me both men are amazing commanders, even if Tywin looses battles he is the best politician in the world and Stannis has always won his battles in hard conditions. Tywin is a cunning and intelligent man and Stannis fights to the end and he always knows how to be eficient.

3rd: I have many men for the third post: Jon Connington, Blackfish Tully, Randyl Tarly, Robert Baratheon, Ned Stark, Barristan Selmy, Hoster Tully.

Note that I don´t mention any Ironborn because I consider them as sea commanders and not land commanders.

Tywin was a terrible general. He was a great Lord Paramount/Hand/etc. but not a general, at least not tactically. He messed up his one chance to crush Robb Stark's host at the Battle of the Ruby Ford, mostly because his plan hinged upon Roose making a mistake. Note: Not relying on your enemy's mistakes to win the battle for you is like generaling 101. Also he never really won a decisive battle in his life. He technically won at the Ruby Ford, but it was indecisive.

Like Tyrion said, he's based on strategy, not tactics.

I suppose you haven't heard about the Reyne-Tarbeck Rebellion then...

I generally agree with most of the above opinions, but I think Eddard Stark should be thrown into consideration as well. He was undefeated during Robert's Rebellion, and was often the cause of Robert's victories, seeing as Eddard led the vanguard.

As far as I remember there has never been any evidence that he led Robert's vanguard and considering Robert's personality it seems like something he would do himself.

Nor is there evidence that Eddard has won a large scale battle at any point.

The vanguard was used to secure ground before the arrival of the main host and to scout out enemy positions. In A Song of Ice and Fire it seems to be used in battle to break up enemy formations, probe for weaknesses and disrupt the enemy before the main army arrives.

In certain cases they can be used to win victories, Blackwater and Ashford both come to mind but in the former surprise and many Stormlanders switching sides at the sight of their supposed king won that battle more than military force, as for the latter, we do not have much information only that Robert was forced to withdraw but the victory itself was not particularly major and caused only a small amount of casualties. This could mean that Randyll Tarly and Robert skirmished for a while and at the end Tarly had gained a magor tactical advantage forcing Robert to retreat.

Do you mean the Battle of the Green Fork?

I think Tywin was very good at not losing, but bad at winning a decisive victory. He would usually bring enough troops to the battlefield and then play conservatively. At the Greek Fork, he arranged his troops in a typical format with a strong reserve, aside from the clansmen which he put on the left hoping they would break and be chased, so that he could swing around at crush the northerners. I think this highlights the extent of both his tactical and political abilities. He plays conservatively so as to not make a mistake, and he doesn't strike until he sees his foe has made a blunder. I would probably put him on par with Roose Bolton.

At the Blackwater, Tywin won because he attacked the enemy rear with overwhelming force. I would not give him much credit for this victory from a tactical stand point. As for putting down the rebellions in the Westerlands, this perhaps was not so much of a military achievement as it was political. The details of him putting down House Reyne are sketchy, but I would think on the absence of further proof that it would be like Tyrell taking down Hightower, or Stark taking down Bolton. As the head of the region, they were probably always going to win due to being more powerful. That's not even accounting for the possibility of any of the Lannister bannermen helping them.

Despite the fact that I prefer the Lannisters to the Starks, I would probably say that the Robb +Blackfish combo was very effective. The majority of the tactical credit for that is no doubt the Blackfish's.

Expecting an enemy to make a mistake and exploit it is one thing, another to hinge your entire tactic on it is quite diffrent.
