Default Reinstalling M2TW, mods ideas for new playthrough?

I am reinstalling the game for a juicy new playthrough and I have only played the game on vanilla, and never really followed the mod scene of this TW iteration.

What are your favorite mods for the game? Which are the best? I am talking about M2 campaigns, not total conversions like LoTR and such.

Thank you. I've only tried this Byzantine/Persian unit roster - sorry I don't have a link, but it's absolutely stunning and it's here in TWC. Other than that, Hegemon Ancient Wars.

Well - since you posted that you are NOT looking for T.C. -

I would not recommend S.S. or Broken Crescent - these are very much like T.C.s

the thing about a mod like S.S. is that its HUGE in download and installation - this is not a simple, easy - 1,2,3, GO kind of mod... Look at these directions - Download this, and that, and get this sub-mod, and then this patch - on and on - you'll have to spend a week just to download and install all the stuff you supposedly need.

Its endlessly confusing too -- S.S. download comes divided up in parts and ...bah - when and if they realease a nice Clean Version 7.0 - one download, one installer = okay maybe..

    Neway --

Darth Mod - the best for m2tw

    Kingdoms --

Kingdoms Grand Campaign MOd - good
Battle Axe Mod -- Good - very good arcade style, new factions but fits and feels like Vanilla, the smallest and easiest install =)

I do agree that the installation of the the submods and the mod itself is a bit tedious, but its definitely worth it.

Not really, the torrent version is neatly packaged into a single .exe file which you run and install, then get the ~150 MB 6.4 patch. 6.3 downloaded for me in about 45 minutes, 6.4 was almost instant. The submods are pretty small in size and will take a minute or two.

Most people seem to go for the file hosting sites which are painfully slow and annoying with their ads and some of them are now asking for a premium account to download because the SS parts are too large.

I don't care if the installation is tedious (well I do care a bit but not if its worth it), I don't want TCs from the point of view that I want the original medieval feeling, not a totally different setting. I'll ready up on S.S shortly after I finish this post , your feedback seems encouraging.

As far as Darth mod is concerned, it is my understanding that I have to have a very specific version of the game, not the latest, and not installed the kingdoms expansion?

Darth Mod does not require Kingdoms - but that doesn't meant it won't work if you have kingdoms installed. S.S. is in the Medeival setting, it is by far the most popular mod for m2tw - I would say there are more people posting in the S.S. section than all other m2tw sections combined!

I forgot to express my thanks for all the help and replies.

I would indeed seem that S.S. is quite the thing I was looking for, and it is indeed very intimidating. People are making mods for a mod for crying out loud! I am surprised I didn't know this existed. I shall eagerly dive in right away, although I'll refrain from adding sub-mods right now, vanilla 6.4 it is for me, enough installing for today!

    Thanks again everyone!

One last thing: Dont use Bygs Grim reality on the first go of SS, it makes the game really, really hard and you should pick up some experience of just general gameplay before you go into that. Also use late era, otherwise the first 100 turns are mostly just militia vs militia.

TATW is by far more popular - it has ~100 people viewing it at the same time most of the time.

True - true - Well It didn't even cross my mind, I hate all that "Elfs and Dorfs" stuff. . . I mean yes, Hobbit was a great novel, but have people even read Lord of Rings? Its less exciting than the bible!

"An, Elfron of the Mountain Pass, spake, he lifted from his chair and bid the men to silence" Lo, have we sung many a song, and had many a merriment, but tis nothing to the song I intend to sing here"

    - Hobbit (good book) - Lord of the Rings (....good thing they made a movie).

Does seem like the vast majority of "Medeival" theme games and entertainment, is of the Fantasy "Orcs, Dorfs, Elfs, and Dragons" variety so these games like m2tw - and the TW franchise generally, offering the same kind of fun without all that C--p lol. I want to pretend that my William Wallace and/or Bruce getting his Chop on at Bannockburn - or the Poles fighting back hordes of Mongrels... I dont' want to pretend to be a Dorf Princess married to the Dragon Elf of the Mystic manor or wte hell all that stuff is about =P

well the mod with the least conversion and most like the orignial is the Retrofit Mod, it just fixes the bugs and adds the Kingdoms features/units

"The Lord of the Rings" less exciting than the Bible? What about the death of Boromir, don't you think that is a dramatic scene full of tragedy and pathos? I've read the first one in all the forms available (book, audio book, radio series, film, computer game, music/songs) and can only conclude that you don't have an Anglo-Saxon heritage (the book was written to give a mythology to the Anglo-Saxon descedants) and/or are simply so grounded in the real world you can't appreciate a fantasy one (that's fair enough, the book was also written to give life to a fake language)

I read the Hobbit, then the Lord of the Rings - in highschool. I loved the Hobbit, but there was too much singing in LotR -- for my tastes at least - too many characters, and too emotional...

Imagine if they had LoTr bugdget but made a movie like... "Brave heart 2 : Wallace Rides again" you know?

Here's a preliminary sketch of how it'll play out --

I feel like the historical based stuff is debased by all the Dorfs and Goblins & what all....Because of LoTR and Westeros and all this stuff -- will MTW 3 be made? ... Maybe they'll decide to make TATW 2 or Westeros TW as the Official Release and the medieval stuff will be a MOD =(

Question: can I still play the vanilla game if I install S.S., can I play M2 and all the Kingdoms campaigns?

I don't think there is any legal way of doing that. I think you will have to buy the game again unfortunately. It is on steam for $25 at the moment but if you have patience It will be on sale for something like $5 some time in the future (probably in the winter sales) or just before Rome comes out. Then you wont need any disks
