    In your opinion, obvs. I've had some success with Dacian Elite Falxmen - on medium they're actually better than a lot of the Roman units - but that's also the only faction I've fought the Romans with, so some input from more experienced people would be nice .

    I believe it may be different for different people, but I can usually make quick work of the Romans with a proper Greek phalanx. Really its all about how you use the army you have when fighting them, same as when you fight any other faction. Ive seen people wipe out the Romans fairly easily with barbarians, I have trouble doing that because I normaly tend to play as a civilised faction and I cant seem to overpower the Romans with a barbarian type army.

    But I think you should just find what works for you, for me its the Hellenic kingdoms.

    Taking on a numbered legion face to face yeh probably the phalanxes are the most reliable. Also any heavily armored unit with AP are effective like those Dacian Elite Falxmen you mention, Armenian Nakharars and some barb champs (I think the Belgae ones have AP). Still a bit slow though.
    Much more decisive if you pin them with some high defence infantry, phalanx or spearmen/hoplites and then use the high attack berserker type troops to flank though - things like Bastarnae, Bear Warriors and Elite Rhomphorwhatever chew things up from back or flank.

    Well for most situations you're not really looking for an infantry that can beat the Legions, just something survive them long enough till you get your cavalry to help out. But let's see. For Carthage Sacred Band to pin and JAv before charge infantry works real well same with Gallecia. The Cimbrians have nice foot soldiers like the Two handed Armor Piercing Bear warrior as well as the hide anywhere Wolf warrior along with their champion unit. I don't know what the Boii and the Belgae have but I do know they both have Champion units or something. The Boii I think should be able to AoR recruit Bastarnae(with building?) or even Dacian Elite Falxmen as mercenaries. Greek land as stated before have Phalanx which will do the pinning job just fine and some of the elite should be able to go toe to toe and Spartan Promachoi should be able to win against the lesser legions on it's own. Armenia as stated above has Nakharars which are AP with great stats but take 2 turns to train and really everything in the east that isn't Armenia, Diadochi or Greek should just really stick to cavalry with some throw away infantry that won't rout so fast. I also forgot to put Dacia but most of us are in agreement that Dacia everything can kill their Roman counter on the sheer fact that Dacia warcry+ AP = Lots of dead enemies.

    ye but javelins in da feis kill rompoguys, bear warriors ecc quite fast, i would still get some heavier armored stuff or meat shields to tank the volleys
    Imo nakharars, phlangitai, namely argyraspides,agema, and maybe belgic champions
    Dunno if the spartans omg op promachoi can actually kill them in meele after getting two volleys, maybe yes maybe no
    Dwailery, in my opinion you are off topic , everyone here can agree with your statement and everyone probably knows about that

    Thanks for the input! From what y'all have said, high defense to hold the line and falxmen/rhomphaiaphoroi on the flanks? Would levy pikemen be suited for holding the line or should I go with something else?

    I've also had a lot of success with heavy cavalry. Cataphracts seriously eff up both Roman cav and infantry if you use them right.

    Levy pikemen do the job fine as long as you protect their flanks. Don't expect them to hold forever against decent infantry though. Most factions have some reasonably strong and cost effective heavy spearmen or hoplites that can do the job too. Just leave them in guard mode.

    crazy bear dudes can pretty much rip the face of anything when they get shoved in at just the right moment{late battle}, i like to see the legion fold when the fresh bear clan tears into them a new one from the side{pilum spent of course}

    Well i try not fight Romans in the Roman way, but from my campaigns, Elite Scutari, Carthage Late Spearmen, Dacian Falxman and others, prove to be more than a match for Roman Legions. But as i said i combine them with other types of infantry and cavalry.

    What Sertorio said. Never try to fight the Romans with their own tactics. Instead pin their Infantry and the circle behind with a good cavalry unit. Also Jav units in the back of Roman units are lethal, use them to your advantage. This coming from a Roman player and fighting against the Capuan rebellion and Roman Rebels.

    If you fight against the AI, then it's fairly easy to kill them as all heavy infantry. Just put something with high defense/good amour at their front, then circle them with slingers. And shot their backs. Works the same against phalanx, legionaries or other though guys. Get some cavalry to protect those slingers and you're ready to go.
