Hello to the TWC Forums.
I've recently had a problem with playing campaign mode in Medieval II:Total War. So it goes like this:
Both in Rome:Total War and Medieval II,I've been having sudden crashes which can't be solved in a way other than turning off the PC and starting it again. There hasn't been a problem with that, until some days ago: when one of these crashes happened, I booted up my PC again and tried to play Medieval II as usual. But,after this crash, another problem occurs. When I tried to play Campaign mode,it happens with this succession:
1- There comes the classic loading screen, with a quote underneath the picture.
2- The quote vanishes, the picture changes, but still no load.
3- Black screen.
I could quit the game by just pressing escape.
But wait! There's more!
After some days of not playing, I checked again. But now, another message occurs, saying : "medieval2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."
OK,so I'm confused. What just happened when everything went all right?
OS: Windows XP Service Pack 3. I have also attached a diagnostics report. Thanks for any help you might provide me.
1. Try updating the High Definition Audio codecs at www.realtek.com.tw. Yours are still 2008.
2. In msconfig, shut down everything not game related starting with acronis, diskeeper, Nero, sandboxie, PC Tools. Odds are you have a bunch of programs unrelated to the game robbing its resources and slowing the game down to a crawl or a complete stop.

I'm sad to say this, but your advice didn't work. I followed your instructions word by word, and even used system restore to get the system back to an earlier day(that day it worked perfectly) but still nothing. But,this time, the game opens up and doesn't open up the "medieval2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." message like it did before. Now it does the screen change and black screen thingy. Got any plan B?

No,I'm not playing a mod,I try to load a save by either pressing the "Continue Campaign" button or from the "Load Game" menu. Both of those don't work. I'll try using MSE,but I don't know how this would help.
YES!!!!! I finally found the solution! (Yes,I have patched it to 1.3 a long time ago.) First,I made a new campaign. It was made successfully and I could load a save from that campaign. Then,I tried to load a save from my previous campaign (not the last one,the one before the last) and it worked. The problem was that the very last save from my previous campaign didn't work for some reason. It also happened to me when I was playing Company of Heroes...all I needed was to go to the save before the last one. Strange, but working. Thank you for giving me the idea, irishron!
