Default Lord Carlisle and Henry Shieldworth: Heretic Hunters Extraordinaire!

Knowing that they had a long journey ahead of them, Carlisle and Henry had ridden hard, now entering the town of Kirkbie Kendal as the sun set. Carlisle was on a mission from the Archbishop of Canterbury to apprehend a heretic and so he was riding south with the Archbishop's man to answer that call.

Kirkbie Kendal was a chartered market town, with nearly every building being constructed from the grey stones of the place.

The sun was setting before them and it made quite a sight. The horses were worn out so Henry decided that it would be wise to find a place to stay for the night.

"We can stay in a nearby inn until morning, if it please you."

However, when Henry reached into his bag of coins, no coins came out. He looked at Carlisle puzzled.

"I will pay for next time"

Carlisle grunted in reply and the two continued on to an inn where they stabled the horses. Normally the baron wouldn't have minded sleeping outside on such a day but he was especially tired today and would benefit from a good night's sleep in a bed. Entering the inn he bought a single room for the two of them before bringing two mugs of beer to a a table and beckoning for Henry to join him.

Henry walked over glady to sit with Carlisle. He sipped on the mug of beer. There were some drunkards in the inn yet it was rather quiet.

"So, where to on the morrow? Another long ride I presume..."

Carlisle grunted in agreement. Henry had the notion that this was the only way this man would communicate if he could help it.

Another day's ride should see us in Settle. Remote. Quiet.

The baron spoke around mouthfuls of beer, quickly finishing his first mug and gesturing for the keeper to bring another two.

Henry had to down his first mug fast, then he milked the second one. After both he felt a bit drowsy and felt like he needed some sleep... as for Carlisle, he didn't know. Henry retired to his bed for the evening.

Carlisle remained downstairs, downing another three mugs before also retiring for the night. In spite of this, he woke early and kicked Henry awake, handing him some hardtack.

Henry was dazed, he slept deeply.

"What do you want?!" said Henry angrily.

Henry jumped up and prepared to throw the nearest thing to him at Carlisle, until he realised what their jobs was.

"Is it time to ride already?"

Carlisle dropped the hardtack before the man and began eating his own.

At dawn, which shouldn't be far off now. First tell me who we're hunting. I've been pointing us in the direction of Kent but for all I know this heretic could be here in this inn. I'd hate to ride past this man just for the Archbishop to tell me to retrace my steps.

"Wiiliam De Vassy. Last time I heard of him, he was at London. He may have moved since then and who knows what else he has done. If we move in that direction we are sure to uncover more news on him."

Raising an eyebrow, Carlisle paused from eating.

Baron of Nottingham, William de Vassy? A tall man with scars on his face?

    Carlisle grunted.

I know him. Remind me to stock up on beer as we travel.

This being the day of the coronation, the two heard the name of the future king and were rather bemused, nevertheless Carlisle was able to get the both of them inside the abbey.
