When they have: 5-6 Royal Pikemen (gold,gold) 6 archers, and 6 companion cavalry? What setup would beat that?

Buy Cretan Archers, use Armored or Spartan hoplites to confront their companion cavalry, use a lot of light lancers to cut down their archers, and the Cretans will kill of the Royal pikemen in a blink of an eye.

Get a few units of Cretan Archers and invest your money into Armored Hoplites. Spartan Hoplites are great, but they are too costly for a fielding like this.

What you want to do is attack with your armored hoplites, or spartan hoplite, and when they begin to fight, take off "guard" mode. This will allow your phalanx to slip closer and closer through the pikes and attack the men themselves. If you keep guard on then your hoplites will stay at pike's range and get slaughtered. Cretans should take care of the 6 unupgraded companion cavalries.



Armored hoplites are virtually impervious to missile fire from the front. Your cretans should be able to deal with any enemy archers (Cretans have longer range than standard archer units), and tear apart Companion Cavalry. Spartans and Armored hoplites beat Royal Pikemen as long as their guard command is off.

Agreed, a bunch of Cretan archers and Armored hoplites. I don't think you'd need the Spartan units though, Armored will do the trick well enough. A few light cavalry would be good for flanking, but then again they'd just be eaten up by companion cavalry. Best bet is to stay put and let them come to you. Cretan archers would pick off a few pikemen and companion cavalry. Biggest concern would be the flanks and the cavalry destroying you that way. You'd really have to use the terrain to your advantage.
