In the game info of the www.totalwar.com the Papacy appears as one of the 5 factions and we know there will be 5 playable factions at the begining of the game.
So could be the Papacy a playable campaign faction?

i personnally dont think the Papacy will be playable, at least not in the vanilla version. I see the Pope as the Senate in RTW...a big annoyance you have to overthrow...
Or use to your advantage. This is much more plausible with Papacy than it was with the Senate, since the Papacy is not the head of an empire and does not fear you overthrowing them. So even if your power rise the Papacy won't dislike you like the Senate did.Originally Posted by Valerius Maximus
Anyway, it was already said what a Papacy campaign could look like; you could manage the religious aspect of the game with giving money to the factions in war with other religions, sponsor Crusades, excommunicate the Christian faction that would attack another Christian faction etc.. The goal of the campaign would be to convert enough of the old world into Christianity. You would gain money from all Christian factions. The rest of the game would be the same as of other facions. Developing Vatican, sending diplomats&merchants. I guess princesses would be excluded from the Papacy campaign.![]()
This would call for quite a lot of Papacy specific game features and I'm sure it won't be in the M2TW. Also almost certainly not possible to mod in. But it would be REALLY cool to play a "manager" type of game.
I would say no.
We know that there will be 4 unplayable faction and Mongols, Timurids and Aztec will be that since they come in later in the game so that leaves one faction.
And since the papal state is a more interesting version of the senate then they will not be playable either.
exactly... i think papal states wont be playable as roman senat wasntOriginally Posted by TB666

Aztecs won't be able to invade Europe.
According to CA you need the technology to travel that far and doubt Aztecs won't have that.
But it would be kinda fun actually if they did.
However there are evidence that some South american people did travel to Europe.
The ancient Egyptians had a very good trade with them.

Occam's razor tells us what to conclude in this instance. I always visit a skeptics page after hearing stories similar to the one you are referring to. The Hall of Maat is one of the better ones.

I very much doubt they will be as it would be too easy if you had the powers of the pope.
You could just make outlandish demands with the threat of ex communication if they don't agree.
