So:
the troops put their shields up (if they are armed with a shield) against incoming arrows
The troops that are able to go into "Testudo" formation are able to come into and out of a testudo faster
the Romans can throw their Pilum whilst running, so that they don't lose their charge bonus like in Rome where they stopped to discharge their pila
