    Default New rig help

    Hi all

I'm not much of a techie and need help putting together the perfect Total War rig.

I will attach my current dxdiag so you know what I am currently experiencing. Due to the incompatibility of the old motherboard, I am reluctant to upgrade this model and would like to go for a new one altogether.

The rig I am using at the moment is perfect for the Vanilla game, but I am all about massive battles and big army mods. I am starting to notice a decrease in frame rate when there are around 15,000 or more units on the field. I tried a battle with around 40-50,000 units on the field the other day, but the frame rate decrease brought the game to WAY below its original speed.

Can someone recommend a rig that can keep a good/perfect frame rate during 50,000 troop or more battles? I am not willing to spend more than £900 ($1300) maximum, if that is even possible!!

    Many thanks in advance

It would be great if any replies took into account the new Rome 2 Total War too (though I hear they are trying to keep the system requirements v similar to Shogun 2)

50k troops might not probably do so

but I'm pretty sure you can handle around 12-15k troops

    Thanks for the reply dude.

When I used the setup below, i used to be able to do 12-15k easily with not much lag at all on normal settings.

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit System Manufacturer: System manufacturer
    System Model: System Product Name
    BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
    Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
    Memory: 6144MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 5886MB RAM
Tri SLI GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280

Seeing as unit count is mainly due to the processor, surely a quad core 4.7GHz Core i5 3570K could do 50,000 on medium settings without lag?

    50k troops is alot lol

I'm not so sure its will handle 50k troops with rig above, even newest hardware these days.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUJNKDGW2so check this battle out. 40,000 ashigaru VS 600 varied hero units. The user uses an i5-2500k processor at 4.8ghz. After chatting with him on his youtube channel, he definitely thinks an i7-3770K can handle it

...You're never going to see 50,000 troops so this whole thing is pointless.

here's 40,600, not far off. using my current rig i have got around 35,000 with lag and that's on a 2.6ghz processor. not pointless, but entirely feasible given the right CPU power

    a) that wasn't "terrible lagging" it was medium lag. A processor more powerful than that could sort that out no probs. if you look at the other users' videos too, his processor is owning battles of around 30,000 troops.

    b) I dont think you've ever seen a super-gaming computer in action, like the one they test these games on. They could easily handle 100,000 if they were pushed to, it's just down to how much money you can throw around. Luckily i just got a tax return of more than £3,000 so i have that kind of money to throw around.

    c) 50,000 is a hypothetical target, it is not the be-all and end-all of my game. If I can have two armies facing each-other, each of 15 - 20,000 troops, i'll be happy.

    d) Cheer up. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Base on earlier interviews pre Shogun 2 release the engine can take up to 56,000 units.

I doubt its possible to play at 50k troops all

My rig is i7 2600k 5Ghz + SLi GTX 680 (former) with newest driver available

Still can't see 15k troops playable... its terrible laggy like 8-10 FPS with troops stuttering animations and skipping.

Serious? Are you playing on max graphics settings? Also, are you using high-res monitor/TV? That's a good set-up, better than my current one which can handle 15k no probs on low graphic settings...

I mean when I zoom close in on all maximum settings GFX

zoom out is fine with around 20-30 FPS sometime dropped to 9 FPS when alot of troops on screen

With Lowest GFX settings, I can get 15k troops with very smooth FPS, like 40-50 FPS

There you go! I guess I am not too fussed about graphics - if I know the battle will have 20,000+troops, i always tone down the graphics to accommodate. Whereas, if it's going to be a smaller one, i put them high.

Intel Core i7 3770K Processor Overclocked to up to 4.7GHz
    Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste
    Asus P8Z77-V Motherboard
Dual Chillblast NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 2048MB Graphics Cards in SLI
    2000GB 7200RPM Hard Disk - 6Gbps
Corsair CX 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified PSU
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
    Install and configure AVG
My suggestion is to replace CPU with i5 3570k and OC that as high as you can.
Replace GTX 670 2GB SLI with single GTX 680 4GB.

Don't use AVG (is that the anti-virus ?) AVG and Steam does not mix well. Use free Avira instead.
