I'm at a loss :( Assistance needed

I've battled trying to be able to play Third Age Total war all day. When I try to play the game, all I see are the two towers of the ancient kings, and then the game "encounters an unspecified error" and sends me back.

I have windows 8, both total war and kingdoms on steam.

Hours and hours trying to get this to work, I kinda had a breakthrough moving some files around earlier. But it only played Third Age without the MOS or the patches.

Just a disaster, been looking forward so much to play this, highly frustrated.

I'm at a loss someone help this die hard LOTR fan.

answer these questions..

1) did you run the cleaner included with MOS
2) have you tried fixed virtual store , UAC i.e searched virtual store for med 2 folder and allowed full security to your med 2 (not sure if this is applicable to steam but it's worth a shot )

3)detail for us how you installed on steam

1) No I have not. Opened it an a little black box appeared asking to press any key. Don't know what to do with that excuse my ignorance.

2) UAC slider is completely off, including the daylight savings time thing that I read about.

3) I bought a pack that came together with Kingdoms on Steam. I downloaded them seperately though, and seem to be up to date since steam updates them automatically.

Concerning this i meant something like this:

1. Install all parts of TATW (3.0 Part 1, 3.0 Part 2, 3.1, and 3.2) to the desktop.
2. Then move the Third Age folder to the Steam/Steamapps/Common/Medieval II Total War/mods folder.
3. Then rename one of the Kingdoms campaigns to something else, like change americas to americas2.
4. Then rename the Third Age folder to americas. Finally, select the americas campaign from the Steam menu and the mod should launch.

~the easiest way for a steam install ctrl + V'ed from the almighty StealthFox

because it does sound like a bad install to me..

although getting knocked back to menu is usually a map.rwm issue ...

map.rwm is located in mods\Third_Age_3\data\world\maps\base

check if it's there and manually delete it if you find it

Was UAC off before you installed?

Also, can you confirm that regular M2TW Kingdoms works without any problems?

Just finished playing a quick battle with the Apache on the America's campaign. Smooth as butter

Also UAC was off the first time, then I uninstalled and installed again. Same thing

Actually got it past the load screen now, but when i go to do a campaign it re-directs me back to the main menu.

Did that, and with the string.bit files, and desr_geography_new.

It is stil a bad installation issue.. uninstall TATW, remove Third_Age_3 folder from your steam/.../ M2TW/ mods folder.Edit the security for your steam/../M2TW folder, and install TATW using one of three methods mentioned on the TATW TECH GUIDE BY STEALTHFOX (the link to it is in my signature). I would suggest using Kingdoms Launcher App.

By edit security what exactly do you mean? I tried googling it, it just came up with stuff about my password, etc.

Ok, after taking a break from it and tackling this with a calm head (lol), i managed to get TATW working, but im still having trouble with the MOS. As soon as I install the MOS and try to play it, it crashes instantly. I save it in the third age folder, not sure what to do there.

Also, I re-installed, ran the batch cleaner. Now it doesn't even give me an error message, just launches me back straight into the menu.

Did everything, and it actually took me to the campaign screen. I thought I was finally home free, I even shouted in victory. Only as soon as I selected my faction and hit start, it took me back to the main menu.

Yes sir.

Now in the process of looking for an uninstaller to completely remove everything so I can install it again. Maybe the uninstaller doesn't completely uninstall it off my comp? Don't know, I'll toy with it for one more night before I hang up the towel.

Usually when you go to Start/All programs, you should find MOS Uninstaller, or Control Panel/ Uninstall a program.

TATW doesn`t make any register changes to your PC, so, you could also remove it by just deleting Third_Age_3 folder, but since you have steam, use Uninstallers ( you have to uninstall MOS and TATW too ) and, if you used the method where you have to rename one of your Kingdoms campaigns to something els, then you also have to delete the renamed folder which contains Third Age TW. ( be sure not to delete one of your Kingdoms campaigns ) .
