Are you not one of those hardcore history fanatics who hate anything that is not 100% historically correct???
Anyways, I would like to see all 3 gladiator types from Rome TW to return as irregular elite infantry![]()
Why don't you remake the thread including a more comprhensive list?
Rudiarius, Tertiarius , Sagittarius,Cataphractarius, Gallus, Hoplomachi, Provocatores, Samnites, Secutores, Scissores,Thrax, Dimachaeri, Eques, Essedari, Laquerarii, Murmillones, Paegniarius, Retiarii,Velites,Andabatae, Bestiarii, Bustuarii, Naumachiarii, Praegenarii,Venatores, crupellarii, gladiatrices, there could be many others and not always respecting a canon...

The one with 'the pitchfork and a net' , how is he called ?
The ones which were hunting animals in the arena were not counted as gladiators if i am correct. But maybe i am wrong on this thing.
Further i would like to see none of these for any faction, except rebels.
Proud to be a real Prussian.
Retiarius
I think they are used some as strat map killers...
The venator is also a gladiator but just specialized in fighting animals , the bestiaria were preceding the true gladiator fights .
As for them ingame I also agree shold appear in slave revolts, probably the elite units of the rebels on roman soil.
But if not wrong some gladiators were used sometimes in battle as well by romans , but I honestly have a foggy remembering of this and on when it happened.

I doubt rebel gladiators would have been stupid enough to fight in their traditional arena gowns ... As a matter of fact, all gladiator types had a pre-set weakness. There were deliberate gaps in their (often light) armors. As long as they had to fight for the amusement of the masses, these weaknesses were OK as they added some "salt" to the spectacle. But once they rebelled (or became the bodygards of an emperor), the gladiators would have been foolish not to seize and use more adequate armour and weapons, for then, they no longer fought for "fun" but for survival.
So I suppose a "Retiarus unit" would be total fantasy. The same for heavy mirmillo ...
Prometheus, this list will be too long, and I can't edit a poll.
I added the most popular gladiators, so there is an option "other". I forgot about Hoplomachus who was very popular, too.
Crupellarii did fight in their own fashion show equipment... lorica ferrea but made them extremely slow... Kind of like field knights...

Scissores. My secondary favorite is Murmillo.
This dude. A man after my own heart.
None. Gladiator unit is nonsense... they were "one on one" warriors... they lacked in "unit on unit" combat.. Roman combat style was very effective for formation fighting. they didn't needed any such units... Its like if Today's US Army would field an unit formed from Olympic shooters.. while they would be great at shooting clay pigeons, they would be of no use in modern combat...
Barbarians are that kind of one on one warriors ...

I am sure what JaM was intended to say, was that a Gladiator is a fighter who is trained to fight in his one role against a few other types of gladiators. That would not really give them an advantage in real combat against people which didn't fought in their rules. Further had the Romans a traditional battle order which didn't allowed single Warriors like Gladiators.
I also do not know all texted reffering to Gladiators, but i believe that the few cases were Gladiators and Slaves were conscipted, that they fought in Roman fashion with the promise of freedome and not as a "Gladiator Unit".
For Celtic and Germanic cultures the fighting one against one was something that they prefered, but this has many, cultural and geotactical reasons. I don't really see the point.
Proud to be a real Prussian.
all of them
I would prefer to see all kinds of gladiators mixed into one or two units. As gladiators never really fought in formation and same types combined.
Gannicus!
