Icon7 My first ever campaign in a Total War game

So here is the story of how I discovered the Total War series. About a year ago I was with at a thrift store with my father. He was browsing through clothes or something and I decided just for the heck of it I was gonna take a look at the small number of computer games in the store. I found a copy of Half Life for a buck and a copy of Doom 3 for a buck. I picked both of these up and then found another game, Medieval 2 Total War. I looked at the back of the box and it looked like a mildly interesting strategy game. I heard of these type of games but I had never really bothered to check them out. I figured for one dollar I may as well give it a shot. I got home, loaded it onto my computer and then an adventure began.

I picked Venice because I wanted to create a new Roman Empire. I didn't really understand the rules of the game and I impatiently ignored all the tutorial stuff and the helpful advice that your assistant gives you. Instead I blindly started attacking other factions, beginning a war against the Holy Roman Empire immediately for the sake of liberating the Italian peninsula. Upon seizing control of the Holy Roman Empire's land in Italy they sued for peace and I then started mercilessly attacking all other nations on the Italian peninsula, including the Papal States. I played for a good 24 hours straight before finally realizing that I hadn't slept or eaten. I continued my psychotic rampage because I had not yet discovered the diplomacy part of the game. Eventually it got to the point where basically every surrounding nation was at war with me and essentially all I was doing was defending my own territory. I then decided to be even more suicidal despite the fact that I was already at war with all my neighbors and launch a glorious invasion of Egypt by sea. I crushed the Egyptians and my brave faction leader marched triumphantly through the streets of Antioch, the last Egyptian stronghold. My army was exhausted but I had won. Then one turn later something happened...the Mongols? whaaaaaaaa???? The Mongols attacked Antioch with 8 armies and although I was able to defeat 3 of their armies with my 2, they eventually overwhelmed me. They advanced rapidly, seizing control of the entire Middle East.

At this point I was faced with a decision, either send my armies in the Italian peninsula to reinforce my position in Egypt or use those armies to crush my European rivals. I decided to tear the Holy Roman Empire, Denmark and Hungary (at the time my three biggest rivals) to shreds instead. I was able to send enough reinforcements to hold Alexandria but all my other possessions in the Middle East were lost. At the same time I effectively crippled the Holy Roman Empire and Hungary and was able to set Denmark back enough to retain my position as biggest, most advanced and strongest faction. Then Milan decided to attack me, after I had taken all of their possessions in Italy they had expanded into France and destroyed the French faction. Milan attacked me to regain their homeland and at the same time the Pope called a crusade against me to which Spain responded shortly after which the Byzantines attacked me. I realized that my position was essentially untenable (I still had not discovered diplomacy yet)and so I decided to just throw everything I had at the Byzantines who were already getting owned by the Mongols. I shredded their Empire in Eastern Europe and fought with the Mongols over Constantinople. All the while Milan continued wrecking my cities in Western Italy. I was able to keep a supply of fresh troops flowing into Western Italy to keep Milan at bay but then the Spanish landed in Rome. At this point I just decided "******* it" and I used cheats to torch all of western and eastern Europe.

During all this my father would occasionally peek at what I was doing and he seemed absolutely entranced by it. My father is a 65 year old man who grew up playing Axis and Allies and other such war games so when he saw Medieval 2 he completely flipped out. It amazed him so much that he went out and bought Rome Total War, Empire Total War, Napoleon Total War and Shogun 2 Total War. He's been playing Rome Total War ever since. (he tried to play Empire and can't figure it out, despite the fact that its supposed to be simpler than the earlier games lol) He gave me all the other games which began a love affair that lasts to this very day. Anyway, for kicks I loaded up my first Medieval 2 campaign today and realized that it is completely broken. I used cheats to raise massive armies without building any kind of sustainable tax infrastructure so without cheats I'm waaaaaaay in debt and I am literally at war with every faction in the game AND I have huge public order problems everywhere AND I have no diplomats because at the time I didn't even know that they existed.

This was pretty interesting to read. My first campaign was on Rome, it began pretty bad as I too did not go through any tutorials. However as the campaign went on I managed to start bringing in a fair bit of money and had a reasonable sized army. I was sadly pushed back in the end by the massive Egyptian empire in the east. I lost that campaign but it was honestly a heck of a lot of fun, defending city after city against the Egyptian horde.

I love it! I remember my first time ever playing Total War, which was MTW1 as well as my first few times playing RTW and M2TW too. It is a glorious thing!

Don't forget to check out the mods too if you haven't already! Oh, and the multiplayer too. Do you and your dad play battles and/or campaigns against each other?

Yeah my father and I have played some Medieval 2 battles against each other. He generally wins because I'm pretty terrible at the type of battles in the earlier Total War games. I much prefer 18th century style battles with musket equipped line infantry and artillery lol.

This reminds me of the first time i played Medival, all my friends thought it was lame so i did not get into it immediately,I kept asking the Adviser on what i should recruit and build, she kept telling me to recruit Peseants and before i knew it i had 4 stacks of useless units and and collapsing economy. I do think i every managed to capture and hold a region until my third Campaign, I still have such fond memories of the Turks...

Reading the first paragraph I instantly thought of this

My first Campaign was similar, I was playing as England and I ignored the useless advisers and tried to invade France. My economy was ruined and I probably would have of lost if I kept on playing.

I still remember one of my first battles taking Nottingham (i'm one of the few who likes instructions, so i played tutorial first ). That was sweet, sweet. Now almost 6 years later here i am. Still playing m2tw with some of that first excitement. Thanks for the nice story! Really like it!

Reminds me of my fun campaign as Spain in vanilla when I was just getting started with Total War. I literally attacked everyone, even people who I had no reason to hate in game (except the French, who attacked me instead for trespassing) and blitzed but I didn't build enough infrastructure and needed extortionately high taxes on my people just to not go broke. The Milanese, Egyptians, and Mongols eventually broke down my offense and rebellions at home (Lisbon, Cordoba) and in the Holy Land (Cairo, Jerusalem Alexandria) ruined me. Also a pointless crusade on the English which I requested (hoping for a successful "Spanish Armada" 4 centuries early ) messed me up because my General got old, died, and the force disbanded. I took most of the HL, all of Iberia and Northern Africa by 1200, but it all fell apart soon after that. Once I started entering the red I gave up.

    Nice story BTW.

I remember my first time playing Empire total war, I'm from the Netherlands so of course I started with the United Provinces, wich of course is the worst choice for starting, well perhaps the Ottomans aren't that good to start with either. But I didn't know the game at all and the lady in the beginning tells you that it's a good idea to attack Flanders. Well if you are a total noob, declaring war on the Spanish and their allies the French isn't such a good idea. So basically I was getting killed within 10 turns and ragequited the game xD

Started the day after that with the Maratha's, didn't know anything about schools or scholars, so I bassically destroyed Europe without ever researching anything xD Friend of mine had downloaded steam en with my account also downloaded the game. He's someone who reads the entire game guide in the text file before even starting the game and then he plays the complete tutorial...

So he bassically learned me how you should play the game, but I had already conquered entire Europe with the Maratha's when I started researching grape shot xD

I still remember how shameful my first campaign was. At the time of course I didn't realise. Few months later I loaded the game to see. England short campaign, it took me to the last turn to accomplish the goal, at war with the Papal States, Crusade ongoing on my city of Toulouse, which was by some reason, empty! Haha, what was I thinking? Perhaps I was afraid of the Crusade. Many, many, many settlements not building anything, my armies made of militia, and many settlements with low public order (I remember at the time my solution to increase happiness was let the settlement rebel, recapture it and exterminate, hahahahaha).

Ahhh, man, great thread topic. Thanks for the post, Canadian Imperialist. That story was very similar to a lot of people’s here I’m sure. After watching about 10 videos from Prince of Macedon on YouTube, I got the itch to play Total War again after about five years. Surprisingly enough, I was actually able to find my old disks and they were in working condition. After about an hour of loading the game on to my laptop, I was ready to conquer the world on medium/hard. I’m not a total nube, just rusty but figured I could handle this level as long as I saved it every turn. Hahaaha! As a side note, given that this game is about 5 years old and my PC is relatively new, I was able to jack up all the graphic options to the max levels without any problems with lag or locking up even when fighting really big battles.

Anyway, I pick the French and start by picking off the provinces around me held by rebels. At some point Milan declares war on me and after many turns I am able to capture several of their cities. HRE, does the same as do the English. So now I am fighting along three fronts. Once I get into a war they never end because I really don’t know how to use diplomacy. The only way the computer will make peace with me is if I am about to conquer their cities (in which case I don’t want peace) or I give them a bunch of money or land. I also sent my heir on a crusade to get in good with the pope, given that I am fighting a bunch of Catholic factions and he doesn’t like that.

The crusade works out great. I wind up destroying Egypt, taking the Holy Land, the Arabian peninsula, modern day Syria, Jordan, Lebonan and parts of Iraq. The Pope loves me. My heir is a 10 star general stationed in Jerusalem and my focus is now in Europe fighting the catholic factions, which I now have a somewhat free hand to do with my new found favor in the Papacy. I eventually destroy the HRE. Spain and Portugal attack (they all do eventually…I suck at diplomacy) and I take most of the Iberian peninsula. A crusade is called against the Moors which I promptly join to try to make the Pope like me again. After about 26 hours of game play (in about 30 hours real time thanks to Ritalin and lots of Mountian Dew) Spain, Portugal, the HRE, and Milan are gone. But the English keep attacking and every time I counter attack the pope demands I stop or be excommunicated. Finally I just say fudge-it hoping he’s bluffing.

    He wasn’t.

Getting excommunicated was the point of no return. I kill England but now I have a crusade called against me. I develop a new strategy…kill all the Catholic factions so the pope will go away. Needless to say my middle east provinces are now tough to keep in line given the how big they are, the distance and the excommunication penalty to order but I am managing OK. I get my 45 provinces and satisfy the winning conditions but of course my lust for power has reached epic proportions so I can’t stop now!

Back to Europe and my new kill all the Catholic factions strategy. Scotland goes. Sicily goes. Poland goes. I even took all the Papacy’s provinces but of course the Pope keeps popping up again…I must have killed him half a dozen times in battle. Still, I have to now kill Denmark, Hungary and find the last Venitian provinces. By this time, I am war everywhere and my provinces in the middle east are rebelling because I let heresy spread due to fact that my attention was focused in Europe where I now control all of modern day Spain, France, the Brittish Isles, Itally, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, Germany the Netherlands, much of Sweeden and Norway, Poland, Switzerland, Austria and parts of Slavic Europe. My head feels like it’s going to explode at 55 provinces. War looks like it is about to break out with the Turks and my strategy of killing my way back into Papal Favor doesn’t seem to be working at all. I declared victory and uploaded the Kingdoms expansion pack!

Friedrich Ironhide, your campaign doesn't sound like a first campaign ever at all, you struggled but was entirely successful. First campaigns you nearly lose to the AI.
