I play at 1280 x 768, most settings on medium, units on high, no antiallising, no bloom. Never had that sidebars issue.

The black bars are caused by the game being at a 4:3 ratio resolution (I think).

Edit the preferences.txt file and change the strategy and battle resolutions to your screen's native resolution (mine is 2560x1600):
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:2560x1600
    STRATEGY_MAX_RESOLUTION:2560x1600
    BATTLE_RESOLUTION:2560x1600
    BATTLE_MAX_RESOLUTION:2560x1600

I'd turn off AA in-game and override it with the nVidia control panel.

    Yes, it's a 30" Dell - 3008WFP and it's native resolution is 2560x1600....

AA is anti-alaising. It's generally best to turn it off in-game and use the nVidia control panel to override or enhance the effects. It's possible to do a lot of tweeking with the nVidia Control Panel.

I think there will be some distortion with the images - mainly icons. I think that is caused by the 'widescreen' effect that is fairly common on a lot of screens (like mine). Personally, I find it OK but others hate it.

With changing the resolution with RSII there are several copies of the preferences.txt and you need to change the right one (or all of them). As we suggest installing RSII onto a working copy of R:TW then all your preferences should be set up (in the data\preferences folder). When you start a campaign it will take a copy of that file and put it into the mod folder for that faction.

Post screens of the images you think are distorted.
