Default The AI, bad looser ?...

    Hi all,

I play the Great Campaign on a old RTW vs AI, as Julii family, difficulty level on "difficult", and we are in -137. So I play this campaign for two big weeks.
Now is the civil war, I assieged Rome against Senat army which is difficult to beat. I finaly took Rome this turn and at the exact moment the city become at my color, the game blocks. The little hourglass stop, I cannot use my keyboard or mouse and have to do CTRL-ALT-SUP to exit (and loose my victory)...
Did that happened to soeone else here ? What can I do ?...

Thanks for your help (and forgive my bad english please !)

Yes, I've tried it much times (I took Rome twice so !), and with a cut on my computer to restore it. No better...
If I reinstall the game, I will loose all the turns (around 150) I've already played, so it's not possible...

You can copy the save file from the Rome folder onto your desktop

After re-installing, you can just paste that save file back into the correct place in the folder and you'll still have your campaign

Go to C: drive --> programme files x86 --> The Creative assembly --> Rome Total War --> saves --> copy the save file onto your desktop, then reinstall.

That's the way to get to the Rome folder for me on Windows 7. It might be different for you, but not wildly different.

I love it when the AI ragequits. Well, actually, I hate it but it's funny so I don't really mind that much. I do stop playing at that moment because I don't feel like fighting the same battle again.

Installing the game outside of Program files might decrease your crashes, as UAC likes to screw you over. Also, disabling anti-virus programs should help as well.

I read a helpfull guide somewhere, on how to reduce CTDs, but I forget where it is.

Turn off autosave in preferences.txt (if it is turned on).

Don't click "continue campaign" to coninue one (in case autosave is on).

Autosave is known to screw up your savegame files.

Also - create a few checkpoint save games - so that in case of your campaign
getting screwed - you won't need to restart from scratch.
When restarting your campaign due to such a problem - try to not repeat the
steps you made the last time - sometimes it will fix it - sometimes not.

When conquering a town in a battle with more than two armies - sometimes
the game crashes once the battle is over - just hope you saved your game
    before and try again differently.

And do as the previous poster said; don't let windows choose your installation path,
    choose your own instead.

here's what I did : I saved on my desk the file of my campaign. Put away RTW. Re-loaded RTW and re-patched it to v1.5 (not at the same place Windows wanted) Pasted my campaign file at is place Put Auto-save on FALSE. And re-opened the game, without loading "continue campaign"... ...After 30 seconds of game, the system crashed ("RTW ceased to function")... Franck

You mean you loaded the campaign which didn't work anymore on your previous installation?

I think you got me wrong - what i posted was meant to prevent save games from becomming
corrupted - once a save game has become corrupt, the steps being mentioned by me won't
help you anymore - it's not meant to repair a screwed up campaign.

I am afraid you'll have to start your campaign from scratch.
