"During his session at GDC 2013 in San Francisco today, Lead Designer James Russell revealed a brand new title under development at the UK studio.

Total War: ARENA will be CA’s first title in a F2P model, representing over a decade of strategy gaming expertise and a new spin-off for the Total War series. Offering players the chance to pitch history’s greatest commanders and their armies against each other in massive team-based battles, ARENA will focus entirely on online multiplayer, mixing elements of RTS and MOBA gameplay.

CA is looking for gamers to help craft their vision of a detailed, deep, multiplayer tactical experience. For more details on forthcoming Closed Beta Tests, sign-up at www.totalwar.com/arena."

Well, We want fun, well-balanced battles that avoid any pay-to-win type distortions.
Our approach is to make the vast majority of content available for everyone for free, so the plan is to focus monetisation more around so-called “accelerators” – you can pay to level up through the content faster, but it’s still possible to get at almost everything for free.

Well, then it's P2W.
Who tried this kind of games at least some times know that, in order to reach the priced contents, have to spend tens/hundreds of hours (full of losses and frustration because other players have bought the overpowered stuff).
Instead of selling "win contents" you can sell stuff that not affect gameplay but that people could like, like new sets of armour/colours or other visual stuff, or new maps or game modes (take a look at Path of Exile...).
But maybe the cheaper and simpler way for you devs is to sell these win contents...

Yea I'm not too excited about this. It's F2P so I'll try it. But, I read up a little on the factions of Warhammer and was excited for the chance to see CA take on fantasy.

I think all the crap in recent gaming comes from multiplayer models. And it's not healthy for turn-based strategies for sure. I now fear for the future of TW gaming as a whole.

How this could be called a Total War? 3 units? This is a disgrace to the name, nothing else.

STREAMLINED is the right word from the presentation.
