CA Developer Icon Total War: ROME II Faction Reveal Eight

    Hey all,

Today we announce faction number eight in our lineup of playable factions. As per usual, head on over to the faction list on the Total War Wiki for more information:

    http://wiki.totalwar.com/w/Factions

So, who guessed all right so far?

I would like it known that a I spent probably too much time today trying to come up with a number eight based pun and failed. It is a dark day for me.

    Enjoy!

the pyramid looks all wrong in that shot. back then it had its limestone facing intact and would look rather brilliant white than yellow...

"1. It's a different version of the phalanx.
    2. Is that wrong? I've seen images of phalanxes where this is how they held the pikes before engaging the enemy (even before they clashed)
    3. Some use their shields as support.
    4. From what I can see, they're on a wall. Probably don't have enough space for a deeper formation."

-1.Well,there's nothing wrong if it is before the main battle starts and while the enemy is still far away, but if they actually engage in melee combat with the formation we see, then that's not a phalanx.A formation in order to be called a phalanx presupposes some specific conditions and one of them is density/cohesion.
2.There might be images showing so,but it never happened in reality. The whole point of using sarissa instead of dori or any other spear is to engage more lines in the fight to gain topical numerical advantage,so why throw that advantage away and engage only with the first two lines?Doesn't make sense. But as I said above,if it's just before they actually form up,then there's nothing wrong.
3.OK.I know it might just be a dramatized picture and nothing more, but I had to ask because you never really know an answer before you actually hear it.
4.Yes,I have also thought of that myself, but as I said above I had to ask because you never know.

"Its just a picture, a dramatized rendering."
-Yes,it is very possible to be so.
"I wouldn't start critiquing it yet, but that's awfully hard for some people to understand, obviously"
-That's actually funny, because last time I checked my post you're referring to,I was asking clear-up questions, not critiquing. But it's awfully hard for some people to understand the difference, obviously.A wise man once said that there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

"Agreed. Modern Macedonians are not Greek. But the ancient Macedonians were considered Hellenes, especially the royal family. They were allowed to participate in the ancient Olympics (restricted to Hellenes) and the royal family claimed lineage from Greek heroes."
-...You disagree with me and still you start by saying "agreed"...interesting perception of things...Now,I don't know if it's on purpose or because you're THAT ignorant, but you're insulting a whole nation and its identity here.I am Greek myself.I'm not Makedonian, but when I served in the army I was sent to Makedonian units for 4 months. After living among them for 4 whole months,I can assure you that they are and feel as Greek as they can possibly be and they're also very proud of their Greek identity and love Greece with surprising passion. Now,a quick history lesson.Makedonians were considered Hellenes, because guess what-they were Hellenes.Makedonia was a greek city state just like Athens and Sparta.Saying that Makedonians were not Greek is like saying that Spartans were not Greek.Just because the cities all operated individually as states and often against each other doesn't mean different identity. There are many examples of Makedonians expressing their Greek identity.Alexander the Great did it many times. In contrary with the southern Greeks, who fought each other and had an unwritten code that the defeated armies will not be chased as a sign of respect for their common Greek blood, the Makedonians usually fought against the northern barbarians and as a result they had learned to chase and if possible annihilate the enemy. So the first time Alexander led his army against the alliance of Athens and Thebes,he ordered his troops before the battle for the first time not to chase the defeated enemy. When they asked him why he replied "In respect of our common blood."After the battle of Granicus Alexander sent 300 Persian armors as a gift to the Athenians and a note saying "Alexander of Phillip and the rest Greeks, except Lakedaimonians, devote those armors."At the battle of Plataea,Mardonios planned at some point to cut off the Greek water supply line. But then, suddenly in the middle of the night before the operation,a Makedonian appeared in the Greek camp and informed them about it.By sneaking out of the Persian camp to deliver important information to the enemy he risked his life. When he was asked why he took such risk he replied "Makedonia might have been conquered by the Persians, but Makedonians are still Greek and I want to help my brother Greeks to avoid the fate that we(Makedonians) have suffered."Another example is the occasion when the Makedonians needed to negotiate with the Illyrians, but could not understand their language because as Greeks they spoke only Greek and needed translators to do it.And other occasions.
"I can answer the first question, the Macedonian phalanx was looser than the Spartan or Boeotian Phalanx. As for the other points, it probably has to do with graphics and the engine. I don't think we'll see a phalanx 50 deep."
-Not really. The sarissa phalanx was about as dense as any hoplitic phalanx, but it was way more flexible because the shields were much smaller and didn't overlap with each other, providing greater freedom of movement, but also way less protection, especially from missile units.
About the phalanx of 50 men deep,it will be an inaccuracy if we don't see it at all, because the Thebans fought in such depth, sacrificing frontage for depth, because more depth meant more body weight and muscle/strength to push forward in the "othismos" tactic. And that tactic was the only way actually to defeat a hoplitic phalanx with another one from the front.

That seems you the modern greeks are also in a deep daydream just like your ancestors. My mean the herodotos and the other greek so called historians that for me they were just story tellers and made their histories full of selfishness and lies. what the fate that poor makedonian were suffered what you speak of it terribly?I will tell you; They were poor naked people that persians rescued them from barbarism, gave them chance to advance and being civilized people.take them to their armies and made them reach enough to build their own armies and betray their kind masters and destroy every civilization under persian rule and violate the peace of the ancient world and start a serial wars that remain for at least 2 centuries who take thousands of lives of hellenistic people as well as hundred thousands of none hellenistic people. That was his fate that he didnt want the other greeks suffer but sadly they suffered, not only greeks but all of ancient people in your great alexander path.

Haha, what a load of crap...

Sorry, but the Persian Empire, just like every empire, didn't want to selflessly uplift the Macedonians, neither any other people they dominated. They did what they did for self interest. That's the reason countries betray the empires they are supposed to serf... because they want to protect their own interest! And yes, Alexander did exactly the same as the Persians did before.

    excellent, I'm so happy.
