Default The Prince: A Machiavellian RPG

Hail and welcome, to the first thread for the possibly upcoming RPG set in Renaissance Italy.
Due to the vote result in the other thread, we will be role-playing in the Republic of Florence.

The chosen start date is 1513 AD, shortly after the reinstatement of the Medici's into Florence during the ongoing War of the League of Cambrai.

The ruling Signore of Tuscany is thus Giuliano de' Medici, the titular Duke of Nemours.
It has been decided that Lucius Malfoy will role play Giuliano.

Thus far, we have decided on a particularly experimental and possibly "fun" method of character rules:
    1) Players may only have 1 character, sometimes 2 if given the moderation's "dispensation" to do so
    2) Players may have characters in a family together, as long as the first player in that family accepts the other players into it.
Thus, for example, three players may play 3 different characters in the Della Torre family together.
This is highly recommended. Prospective players may want to meet with other prospective players to discuss teaming up and what surname to use.

Surnames of families in power elsewhere are forbidden. IE, no Habspurg relatives, no Gonzagas, no d'Estes, etc.
Families that were once powerful but are now displaced must be discussed with moderation first.

The thus far claimed surnames are:
Medici - Lucius Malfoy, Adamat, Ace
Aquino - Bastard Feudalism, Prince Tafari, Alexandrine
    Gondi - Ganbarenippon
    Pazzi - Jokern, War Lord
    Orsini - Pinkerton

    Players looking for partners:
Celsius (has given interest in the surname "Salviati")

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mod Team Head Mod: Bastard Feudalism
    Vice-Head Mod: Lucius Malfoy
    Mods: N/A at this time
If you are interested to mod, please send a PM to Bastard Feudalism and Lucius Malfoy (use multi-recipients).
Note that we are not concerned about having enough moderators right now.

To note anyone who was interested in being a Medici, there are some leftover
    Such as...
    - Lorenzo (II) Piero de' Medici, Duke of Urbino (the historical successor of Giuliano and father of the future Catherine de' Medici, wife of Henry II of France; he would be present with Giuliano in Florence as he was made Duke of Urbino in 1516, by his uncle, Pope Leo X, but doesn't gain it till 1517 after the War of Urbino)
    - Giulio di Giuliano de' Medici, a Cardinal and the future Pope Clement VII (probably not recommended as he would be in Rome)

If you wanna make up your own (which I would recommend), we can discuss some way they are related to Giuliano de' Medici

Tentative claim to the Frescobaldi surname? As the one I originally considered is probably not allowed.

What's actually going to happen in this game? Is it focused on war and interaction with other states, or more towards the general running of the city, with political intrigue etc?

    Both I suppose.
But I think more focus would be on politics within Florence itself and the Tuscan countryside.
Families and essentially "gang warfare" of the sort.
Like Capulets and Montagues if you will.

There is a Condottiero (who were Italian mercs) who was of a cousin branch of the Medici family.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_dalle_Bande_Nere

His father was the son of a Medici banker, who was the nephew of Cosimo I of Florence, the first ruler of the Republic. He is also the son of the famous Caterina Sforza, one of the great women of the Italian Renaissance So you would be a very distant cousin. Read his whole article and ancestors.

If not him, you can make someone else.

    Aka "the usual"?

Sounds like a good setting to do it in though. If I join I might sign up with you and be an English mercenary, like Thomas Cromwell.

Well BF wanted to go Sforza cause he thought they were exiled from Milan by now. But they aren't so he is reconsidering his family's name.

Hmm that could be a possible avenue of RP, though in the war of the League of Cambrai, whats Florence's relation to the papacy, France, and the Empire at the moment the game starts. Given the circumstances, I would like to protect teh independence of Florence, then create an alliance of Italian states and reclaim the po valley and the southern part of the Duchy of Milan

Well, what do you guys think about the whole deal of trying to create a Italian non-mercanary army and attempting to Liberate Italy. You know, combine the old roman methods of Discipline with German-Swiss infantry tactics and weaponry and Croatian-Hungarian-Eastern European calvary tactics in an army made up of Italian Citizens.

Also, perhaps we should try to get the counter reformation passed earlier

Unless we adversely affect it, and I mean greatly affect it, the war will proceed as it did historically.
Same with most if not all historical happenings outside of Tuscany.

I'll go ahead and claim the surname Douglas, not sure on the first name yet though. I'll use artistic license and have his backstory being that he was forced to flee Scotland following the Battle of Flodden. A knight, too far down in the inheritance chain of the Douglas family to be able to gain lands by his father dying. If it's okay with you Ace, he's recently joined your company of men.

So question, how close are we gonna go to history and what is gonna be our like objective of this, is their gonna be some grand plan or narrative, or a struggle against external power or internal conspiracies or is it gonna be driven by player on player conflicts with little mod story-telling and leading.

We are pretty much keeping history up to the starting point. Its fairly sandbox with historical contexts and narratives. So everything involving the Holy League, the Italian Wars, the Medicis, the Republic of Florence, etc all happened. Now with the starting date, its left up to us. We will keep some things historical throughout the rp, but not everything. Majority will be left up to us.

As for our objective, I believe BF can answer that better than me. However, BF told me it involves pretty much all you just listed in your question.
