Dain is alive in the dwarvish one. He perished shortly before Sauron was toppled.

After many months war came to Erebor in the Battle of Dale. King Brand of Dale was at war with Easterlings along the River Carnen, but they defeated him and he retreated back to Dale where he was given aid by Dáin and an army of Dwarves. After three days of fighting the Dwarves and Men were driven back, and Brand was slain. But defending his body stood Dáin, who at over 250 years old was not feeble, and still could wield his axe with great skill. But his skill was not enough and he was slain as well before the gates of Erebor.^[1]
Several days later the Easterlings learned that the Battle of the Pelennor Fields was lost and they were afraid. When the new King Thorin III Stonehelm, son of Dáin, and Brand's son Bard II saw this they came out of the mountain and routed their enemies.

God the more and more I listen to the song Misty Mountains from the Hobbit, the more I want to do a Dwarven setting.

I've got a number of ideas for a Dwarven setting that will allow large degrees of flexibility in terms of specializations that will be necessary to a group, somewhat like Thorin & Co. but more along the lines of a medieval commune than a single group of several individuals. Smithing, tinkering, masonry, exploring skills, and things of that nature giving people unique value.

That actually sounds like an awesome idea. The whole goal of this rp is kinda to experiment with specific scenarios rather then a wide spread game. One of these scenarios could be a group of dwarves like Thorin and co, as you said, each with a specific skill set and job. I have no idea what these dwarves would be doing but that's what other people are for.


Elves or Dwarves, I am fine with either. I feel that using men wouldn't open up as many possibilities as they were highlighted in The Lord of the Rings, and the hobbits of course, and yes I did read the Silmarillion.

The versions can range from the War of Dwarves and Goblins to the Battle of Dale.

The more and more I look at the Men option, I feel its gonna just be a medieval roleplay with fantasy. I mean the most interesting choice for them would be to play as the Kingdom of Arthedain during the War of Angmar. Gondor and Rohan would get a little boring after awhile cause they are mainstream and not much else to do except fight the forces of Mordor or Isengard (depending upon the era). Men of Brethil would be another interesting option. Easterlings and Men of Dale would be another interesting option.

I think our best option for the best RP would be a Dwarven expedition into Khazad-Dum. Not necessarily Balin's expedition but something along those lines after the Battle of Azunibilzar.
