Killing Floor is a Coop survival horror First Person Shooter (it's quite a bit of things) published by Tripwire Interactive. I got this game last Halloween and have really enjoyed it ever since. Killing Floor, as it's description, pits you against seemingly endless hordes of the undead, or "specimens". From slow, but numerous, "Clots", large chainsaw wielding "Scrakes", to what seems to be a mix between man and machine aptly named "Fleshpound". With content updates to compliment pretty much every major holiday, making what could be repetitive game play a constant fresh feel. The game even has a decent story behind the events that transpire in game, and a ton of different characters with their own personal descriptions.
The game play of Killing Floor is pretty straightforward. You kill and kill until you can't anymore, but Killing Floor features a perk system. Players can choose from six different perks with each perk having their own benefits. Each of these perks are even able to be leveled up in game by using a particular weapon and getting kills or kills on specific enemies to give more and more benefits with each perks individual level up. You don't even have to be playing as one particular perk to level up another perk, making it fairly easy to level up these perks over time. The more you play, the more beneficial. There are several different enemies that you and your team will be put up against in Killing Floor. Slow, fast, powerful, and finally the boss. All added in progressively of course. The mixture of these enemies can be quite a challenge, if you so choose to overlook the slow and weak enemies it could easily come back and bite you in the ass, literally, or shoot a fireball at you too, that could hurt. Playing as a team is a must if you and your squad actually wish to survive Killing Floor, and it's numerous maps. Team play is the essence of Killing Floor, though there will always be those players who think they can take on everything alone, just hope you don't get any on your team!
There are many different maps, weapons, characters, and even community made projects to play on, and with. There are several different weapons and characters DLC's on Steam that you can purchase. They are all a very reasonable price as well, just wait until there is a major holiday (especially Halloween) and it will all most likely be on sale for a great price. Not to mention with each major holiday the game as a whole turns into something totally different! With great holiday events where you can unlock characters and weapons and even having complete overhauls of the enemies, while their premise stays the same. Enemies will be completely reskinned with new sounds and even voice acting to compliment the holiday! There were Gingerbread men who wanted to eat me for God's sake! I don't even think the game could get old for me, and it's been out for several years. Even if you (somehow) got tired of the game anyway, you can just go and check the Steam Workshop and try something new and community made!
The way you actually purchase weapons, armor, and so on is through a merchant that pops up in different locations of each map at the end of each and every round. This can also be very useful if you happened to get separated from the group during the round, so you can meet up with the rest of your team at the merchant's location. Earning money is fairly simple and straightforward the more enemies you kill the more money you make, and the higher the level of each enemy determines the amount of "Bounty" that each enemy is actually worth. You can always use one of the many voice commands and ask your allies for cash, better hope they are generous! While shopping you have a countdown from the end of the round and how much time you actually have to travel to the merchant, so players will always have to make sure they can make it to the merchant in time.
The weapons of Killing Floor include things you would see in the average First Person Shooter (like an M4a1), but it also includes a wide variety of uniquely modified weapons and, even with the last Christmas update a laser gun that can actually stun enemies and, get this, a Dwarven Axe that, on top of being powerful, can actually throw enemies across the map! Like if you so decide to be the team medic you can buy unique weapons modified specifically for medics, you can actually heal your teammates with your gun! The wide variety of weapons ensures that players can have a different experience each time they play combined with the perk system certain weapons you use can be more beneficial than others depending on the perk you actually wen't with. The game's maps are situated in London, where the outbreak actually happened. You will find maps like West London, Farm, and the event maps like, Moonbase (Literally, a moonbase), Santa's Evil Lair, and something else aptly named, Abusement Park. Moonbase actually features a low gravity situation! Each map having their own pros and cons, for instance in Farm it is very dark, very large, and you can get lost easily being separated from the group.
Having a wide variety of different characters to play suited to please almost everyone just adds icing to the cake, so to say. With each having their own personal biography and unique look. Hell, there is a character who actually carries around wads of cash in his hands and even an animation to go along with it. All these characters only add to the atmosphere of Killing Floor. Choice of character does not effect game play in any way, so you can choose whoever or whatever your heart desires without consequence. Funnily enough the Pyro from Team Fortress 2 is actually included as a playable character in Killing Floor!
I recommend the game Killing Floor to anybody and everybody who would just like to kill some time and have some fun at the same time. The game may not be something to be taken too seriously. Things like character Biographies where some can be taken seriously, and some not, really just proves how laid back the game really is. If you like horror games, first person shooters, and coop this is for you. There is almost nothing I can actually find at fault with the game, although the graphics are pretty dated. That shouldn't be too much of an issue however, the game will run great on most if not all of systems. For what Killing Floor is go and pick it up. You won't regret it!
