If you can run Shogun on high, you'll probably be playing Rome 2 on medium/high.

Installing the game on an SSD is a great idea, if you got the space for it. There's no reason to buy an SSD just for Rome 2 though, you'll probably be cutting loading screen times in half, that's it, so not worth the investment. If you've already got one for your OS though, and space for Rome 2, then why not?

A formal thankyou to all the guys who helped me in here, especially alqamar for his guide which (for me at least) has proven to be accurate. This game is absolutely stunning and is only going to look better and better. I'm trying to rep you dude but it seems to be down because of the crazy traffic on here.

So this morning I ran the benchmark test that Rome 2 provided in their Options menu on Extreme settings for my rig (located in my sig). I haven't done anything else but that so far. Surely larger battles will be even more graphically intensive.Got an average of 32.4 FPS on the Benchmark test. Any other members run this yet? Post your rig specs too.

To say that I'm disapppointed with my laptop's ability to run this is underwhelming. I'm not a technical guy at all, but I know these specs for certain:

OS: Windows 7 (on a laptop! Part of the problem...)
    Processor: i7-2760 QM CPU @ 2.40 GHZ
    RAM: 8 GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GT 555M

According to "can I run it" I should be having a fantastic old time, as it maxes out the performance bar, and meets/exceeds all recommended settings...and yet it runs terribly. I've lowered unit sizes to medium, unticked all the flashy options that make the game look prettier and set all boxes to the lowest setting, whether it be "off," "low" or what have you, only keeping unit detail and size at medium (I even tested unit detail at very high, and it still looked appalling) and yet the game is still jerky, almost like it's constantly lagging for a second, every second, with any effects around cities/units making it even worse. Here's the "can I run it" review:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

And yet the campaign map lags, battles have terrible performance, and if my Roman soldiers are wearing chain mail, I can't tell, because it looks more like grey leather that's had mud slapped onto it.I knew that I wasn't going to be able to run this game on anything close to extreme quality, even with the thumbs up that "can I run it" gave me, but I never thought it would have to be this bad. Thank god I've got a decent PC in the house that the game looks good and runs well on, because if I didn't then I'd have wasted Ł35 on this...it's unplayable on my laptop. I can run Medieval 2 with better graphics and better performance than Rome can manage, even though I supposedly exceed all the recommended specs.

If anyone knows of any tweaks I can do, or hardware that would make the game go from crud to stud then I'm all ears (even though I can't imagine anything being able to make what I'm working with playable) but this is my advice to anyone with a low-end/old PC or a laptop that's considering getting Rome 2 - DON'T. If you're dead-set on it then try find a friend that will set their account up on your computer/laptop and will install it on there for you to give it a shot and see how it runs. If I didn't have that PC in my house I know I'd be absolutely livid at having paid for this, so don't just buy it if you're unsure./rant

Can you please run the benchmarks in my signature for rome 2? This thread always stated that can you run it just compares figures of the spec recommended but has less technical legitimation to say if the game really runs or not. Imho CA improved the game for laptops and lower end rigs but performance is very bad on mid and high end rigs.

    I've not got Shogun 2 on my laptop/PC, so I'm afraid I can't.

EDIT: actually, having looked through some of the instructional video, it looks like Shogun 2 isn't needed - I assumed that you had to run the benchmark in that game, or something, based on what I was reading. Obviously not, so I'll get to it sometime.

I currently have a PC and play it tragically.
    Asus M2N1394
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+
    GOODRAM 2gb 667 MHz + 2GB Patriota 800 MHz = 4GB 667 MHz
    Gainward Nvidia GeForce GT 240 512MB DDR5
    Windows 7 64

If I bought AMD 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition this situation is greatly improved by the? Unfortunately, I have limited funds.

Hello there since the game came out I guess i also have to update the GPU from my current ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series to a 7870 so my question would be
Do i also have to overhaul the system? which is AMDPhenom II 965 3400MHz 4 Core + 8GB Ram??
and if i just need to upgrade the GPU do i also have to flash the MB?

A hint would be great + rep

btw, the game settings are automatic on Extreme...even with a 5700

You want to upgrade to a 7870 from the 5700 series correct? Trying to decipher your post... You do not need to upgrade your CPU or motherboard to buy a new GPU, no.

Optimization issues are problematic for a number of gamers right now, I myself on my rig (see sig) have flawless performance set on Extreme settings. When you run the Benchmark option what is your avg FPS?

If I may ask a quick question: I supposed my i3-540 CPU is obsolete for modern gaming? As is my HD 5450?

    Thanks ahead

Yeah I would think so. Maybe the lowest settings are still possible?
