Thread: Build a PC for Rome 2 / Hardware Recommendations and Advice Thread

I found the reason for the bad crossfire scaling in Shogun 2. The ModManager.exe preselection application results in a launch process which seems to initialize Shogun 2 as a windowed application first. And windowed application don't support crossfire. Renaming ModManager.exe to ModManager.exe.1 for example solves the problem

@ kamikazee786 - If you can play Crysis 3 on those kind of frame rates, I wouldn't even slightly worry about upgrading for Rome 2. We have seen that Rome 2 will be much more graphically enhanced, especially with the new massive poly counts for the models, it won't come close to the demands of Crysis 3 or Farcry 3.

@ Barbarian - You're right about needing 2x 7970 for Shogun 2 on the highest graphics while on 1440p, but if you were just on 1080p I guess one 7970 would cut it. The screen shots look amazing by the way.

I don't know anything about Computers, only got interested after joining the forum.

Here is what I have ordered for Rome 2. Is it good? Have I been cheated and given bad advice?

OR is this legitimately a good PC?

    • Narf PC:
      • Intel Core i7 3930K 3.2GHz 12MB
      • Intel DX79TO Extreme Series ATX USB3 SATA6 FW
      • Corsair HX Series 850W HX850 80+
      • Corsair Obsidian 650D Case
      • Corsair SSD Force GS 240GB
      • Samsung SH-222AB/BEBE bulk black SATA
      • Corsair DDR3 PC1600 32GB kit CL10 VENGEANCE
      • Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid cooler
      • MSI GeForce GTX670 PE OC 2GB DDR5 TWIN FROZR IV

    Thoughts?
NOTE: It's not too late for me to cancel the order.

depends what you paid for it, but that is all expensive gear mostly, i would have cut down on the cpu a bit and would have gotten an extra 670.. if this is prebuild what did it cost? like 3-4k?

Could you explain a little? The cost is 2856 Dollars, or 2214 Euro. 16500 Faroese króna(KR/DKK). It's a man who have proposed this build and asked that amount to build it for me.

i know my pc is kind of mediocre but ive ran crysis 3, shogun 2 and battlefield 3 with everything at full settings and MSAA at X4 with the frame rate getting to about 40-50 fps and playing beautifully and if i can play all those games with excellent results then do i really need to upgrade anything ??
i'd look into getting that cpu speed up a bit but from first glance you cant oc these i5's 2300...i'd look into a new quad core that overclock. but if you can run the games you say fine then there's no reason rome2 wont perform worse.

well the cpu is £400 alone...head over to the basement and read the stickies about building your own...with a budget of around 1000 euros we can get you playing on ultra...

    @Narf
The exact same components will not cost $1000 less but the configuration is overkill in many instances. The CPU has 6 cores which are never used fully in any existing game. For half the money you can get a CPU which has the same speed in essentially every game. Are you going to extremely overclock the CPU? If not, there is no need for a water cooled CPU. What are you planning to use 32 GB RAM for ? The PSU is also quite oversized (my 2x7970 GPU overclocked, 2500k CPU overclocked, 5 HDDs/SSDs computer draws 600W during gameplay, including 27" monitor) but not very efficient. The graphics card has only 2GB which is ok at the moment but if you ever want to upgrade to a 2nd card, the 2GB VRAM will limit the usage quite severe (e.g. Shogun 2 @ 2560x1440 @ 4xSSAA uses 2.5GB VRAM, Skyrim with mods at that resolution >3GB VRAM, ...)

I would cancel that order and do some more research. Do you have a link to the shop?

Also, what are you planning to use the computer for, besides TW games? And which kind of monitor do you have?

You don't need to build your own PC but we can surely help to find you a better balanced configuration for your needs.

If you don't know what you're doing don't try and build your own.

Anyhoo, you can save yourself some cash there quite easily.

I'd drop the i7 for an i5 unless you're into video editing or other stuff. the i5 is better for gaming. If you can get it overclocked too

850W PSU is overkill for what you have, drop down to a 650.

Again the 240GB SSD is overkill if you're just popping your OS on there. Drop down to 128.

32GB RAM is waaaay overkill haha. 8GB should suffice, or 16GB if you really want. RAM is cheap anyway so it's no matter.

Liquid CPU cooler is good if you're overclocking, otherwise not worth it. I've got an H80 and it does the job fine.

The 670 is a very decent card. You don't need to SLI it like someone suggested, unless you really want to. It'll comfortably handle most games, and you can always get another further down the line.

    Hope that helps!

thks for pointing that out Barbarian, the guy has listed a pc that will def kick ass but you can build your own for a lot less that will have similar perf.

also we dont know how much he is charging for labour...i'd say it's quite a bit..

also yes screen is a factor there is no point getting a system like that in my opinion unless you are on 1920x1200 or similar high res.

Tw games and graphics 3D compression and some video editing.
Overclock the CPU? Uhh I don't think so..
I was told the watercooler was more silent, thats kinda why i wanted it. Dunno.
PSU? Uhmm i'm going to have two big monitors
    .
This is the guy helping me:

I think 2 more monitors are reliant on your GPUs not your PSU (they're powered through separate leads ofc.), though the GPUs are reliant on the PSU! If you're running two monitors, then yes 2 GPUs may be worth it. Look at 2x 660ti's though, they scale together very well and will save you some cash. Overclocking is definitely worth it. Esp. considering the way the Warscape engine works. It will also help processing when video editing (I'm a professional videographer). Saying that, an i7 will help with video editing, but it's not essential, my i5 does the job just fine.

I truly appriciate all the help, I do, I may just be too blond to benefit from it all properly.

+ Rep to all three of you.

Edit:I've Canceled the order for now.. Now I'll try and rethink it, I still need to be able to run two big monitors, and have the 32Ram. And I still don't know about overclocking.

Well, there are 2 ways to look at that configuration.
    - On the one side, it's a serious beast and if you have software which can make use of all the CPU power (6 cores) and RAM like for video-editing and graphics 3D compression (which applications do you use for that?) and if that guy provides good customer service in the case of any problem then it could be ok (i would still change the SSD to a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB if possible and maybe switch to a 4GB VRAM GPU if you plan to use that computer for more than 2 years since you could almost double the performance by adding a 2nd 670 relatively cheap)

    - If that budget pushes your possibilities and you want some more 'bang for the buck', then you could probably save about 500 euros relatively easily by giving up 0-30% performance (depending on the application).

Here in Germany with also have some online shops where you can configure your own computer and they assemble it for something like 100 Euros. Something like that would be cheaper but your local guy should have the better customer service so it's a question whether you want to pay extra for the better service (primarily in the case you have some problem).

And yes water coolers are quieter than the cooler which comes with the CPU but when you don't overclock your CPU then the watercooler will be 'bored to death' and a good air cooler for 50 euros less will be as quiet as the water cooler for the most time.

So this would be more efficient with and extra GeForce GTX670? I do have more money if need be.

@Totalheadache, Thank you, I'll watch them in my bed tonight.
