Default Request: Smaller Deployment Zones in Ambushes.

One thing that bugged me in Shogun II (especially FoTS) was the oversized deployment zone for the enemy when ambushing enemy armies. And also player's deployment zone being too far in ambushes.

It was just far too large for a successful ambush. Enemy can reorganize his army within seconds. At my friend's house (who has base game Shogun II) I was playing the Takeda. I ambushed a large army of the Uesugi (that purple warrior-monk faction if I am right). I placed my troops as near to the enemy zone as I could, and started the battle. But even then my army was too far. By the time I reached the Uesugi, they were already in battle formation, and this battle turned out to be nothing different from a pitched battle which I had tried to avoid.

Similar problem is in FoTS, which I have on my own PC and play regularly. I was playing as a large Tosa army and ambushed a huge Jozai army in their own lands. I started the battle, but by the time I reached them their gunners were already in formation and facing me, and I was gunned down. Some turns later, my army was ambushed too, but I could arrange my army in formation within seconds to deal with the enemy.

By the mid-game FoTS, it became ridiculous to play as traditional factions. The enemy modernised and the only way to defeat him was to ambush him. BUT HOW IN THE NAME OF GOD a completely Samurai army without any guns supposed to beat a modern army without proper ambushes?! I can win a few battles but with high casualties, and not for a long time. To play as a traditional army, you HAD to ambush, and ambushing in a flop system was making me quit many times.

In RTW and Medieval II, I have seen the system work fine. The deployment zones were closer to each other, and the ambush victim got very little space to redeploy. When Roman armies were marching, I used to suddenly charge raging barbarians on them from two sides, and THAT was a proper ambush. When I jumped 2,000 Aztec soldiers on the heavily armed Spanish and won, THAT was also a good ambush. I have not ambushed anyone nor ever been ambushed myself in Empire and Napoleon till yet, so I cannot say for those games.

In Shogun 1 and Medieval 1, ambushing was the most fun part of the battles for me, and they worked best in those games compared to any of other TW games.

So my request to CA here will be to make proper ambushes this time. Shogun II was nearly flawless, but this was a major game breaker. I plead CA to bring back small deployment zones AND make them very close, as in RTW and Medieval II. In Teutoberg Forest trailer, it seems good to have multiple ambush features like those rolling hay-stacked balls of fire. But it seems uncertain that deployment zones will be close enough. I hope this time ambushing system will work properly again.

I absolutely and whole-heartedly agree! Your post has literally said everything that needs to be said on the topic, bravo sir. CA needs to make this change.

I read somewhere that when you ambush an army in Rome 2, you will ba able to deploy on most of the map kind of like in sieges. And the enemy army will march into the map, like when armies got reinforment in the older games.

If it is the truth, then there will be even more problems of AI exploiting. In Empire/Napoleon, there were many players who used to put their musketeers all around the reinforcement entry point. The units in enemy army entered the battlefield one-by-one, and thus they also got decimated one-by-one by the player's soldiers.

And ambush victim cannot enter the field with all units at the same time, since this requires him to be in formation, and that means failure of ambush.

The way I interprated the various information leaked around the web was that the ambushed army would be automatically deployed in marching formation in the middle of the map for the ambusher to deploy his troops around.

That is better. Just like RTW or Medieval II.

Ambushes in the other TW games were fairly poor aswell.
