i can nvr get them to accept either, but whaT EXACTLY IS A PROTECTORATE. I DONT FULLY UNDERSTAND :confused0
iv never succesfully done it, but have always planned to. you could always try sending more armies, but whats the point in a protectorate with one province, unless you gift them some of yours. iv always planned on doing it by offering a large sum of money, money solves all diplomatic issuesbut for some reason iv never actually done it...
the only way iv seen it done successfully is with the save/load bug, which is cheating.
EDIT: a protectorate gives you a % of there money per turn, thats the only perk iv heard of.
Always Outnumbered...Never Outmaneuvered
ehhh. id rather just destroy um then. if they have just one province, theres no point not 2
Yeah, basically a protectorate is your clent kingdom that subdues to your overwhelming power. Unfortunetly even though you are overwhelming they never want to accept. In fact they come up to you and ask you to be thier protectorate. Now of course no one would accept that cause its freakin stupid to subdue to a lesser nation :tongue002 but I always accept when someone asks me. I only do this cause i usually get 10000 denarii out of them. I gave my independence for 10,000 denarii (sometimes more) and usually they end up breaking the protectorate alliance within a few turns, so I come out ahead even more than i already was.![]()
I have made protectorates many times.
Usually it works for me when I have six fullstack armies right beside their capital city, and their forces are reduced to almost nothing. Of course, I only do that if their nation is advanced, has walls, and could possibly make me lose thousands of soldiers.
Protectorates are good as a temporary state to allow you to build up and conquer them later, or destroy the threat without conquering useless lands, like Arabia or Sahara that don't contribute to your economy. Later on when you're nearly done the game you can go back and own them.![]()
Well as I understand,
protectorate in RTW - a subdued faction/client kingdom with whom you have trade rights, military access and most importantly it gives you cash/tribute for "your protection" (you are the protector) each turn if it has spare.
Protectorates also provide you with great "buffer" zones against other empires.
Protectorate in RTW can be broken if you attack your protectorate's allies.
The ways from my experience how to gain a protectorate:
1. Your military ranking should be significantly higher than the enemy faction's
2. You blockade enemy's ports and couple of your full stacks start marching to their important settlement (esp capital) wiping everything in their way (just before sieging ask them - they might be scared).
3. usually after a crushing victory or 2, when enemy is scared/beaten to crap as hell and their military significantly weakened
4. giving back their towns and giving them cash (I hate doing that personally - better destroy them utterly)
“Great empires are not maintained by timidity.” ― Tacitus
it's diplomatic stance. its better than killing the whole faction off imo.
benefit's: you get trade rights, millitary access and they usually never attack you.
and if you have ER's mod they can offer you with their own local troops. but i dont think that mod works with 1.5.
sometimes you can make a protectorate with 3 regions or less. im not sure if they give you money except through trade.
btw their lands count as yours.

From my games, you never make a protocterate, its pointless trying. Just totally destroy them. Far quicker.

If military might doesn't scare them, offer a big chunk of money. They'll usually take it and you'll make the money back with the tributes.
This is the only way I got a protectorate (in RTW). However it cost me 1 million denarii and I got that huge amount through the magical command known as add_money. Ironically, I only learned that from M2TW!
Also in one of my M2 campaigns, I remembered I was war with Scotland (playing as france I think). After sometime I demanded that they become a vassal of mine. When I placed my demand, the balance indicator said it was "very generous." Not able to resist the offer, I submitted it and the Scots became my vassal.
there's no real point making a protectorate. If the faction is so weak that they'll give up their freedom, you may as well take their cities.
Yes, but you can get some money out of them first so sometimes it is a reasonable optionOriginally Posted by Brutii Matt
Also, in certain situations, you can use them as buffers between you and other large empires. In one campaign, fighting the Carthaginians, I conquered the lands of North Africa, all the way to the Sahara, and just left the Carthaginians with Tripolitania. The Ptolemaics were a pretty big force to reckon with in the east and I wasn't ready to face them yet. With the Carthaginians as my protectorate and by controlling Tripolitania, they provided a good buffer, which in turn gave me enough time to mobilize enough troops to move against the Ptolemaic empire.
I once had a very, very powerful julii army. The gauls were reduced to their iberian province and had lost several decisive battles. I sent my best diplomat offering them LOTS of money if they became protectorate, they refused, then I made the same offer but also gave them one of my provinces, they refused, very celtic indeed, huh?
Then I attacked their town and lost no men at all in the process....
What a good AI, it really knows when to quit, doesn't it?
I've only managed to get a protectorate once, and that was purely by accident.
I had just conquered Carthage as the Scipii and most of Numdia save a few provinces. I had an overwhelming army on tour of africa so I decided to send a diplomat to Numdia and they agreeded quite randomly to be a protectorate, they had an army worthy of challeging me for a good 10 turns, but it left me free to invade spain and set up a boader with the Julii.
my protectorates usually betray me
I've been playing RTW for almost two years now- not once have I ever successfully created a protectorate. Also, why would I need it? I'm playing a game as Numidia currently, in which I have controlled Nepte for several turns. I've cultivated it, making sure the population keeps growing, and currently it's giving me 700 denarii a turn. It's garrisoned by a bunch of javelinmen and a crazy governor, but hey, if it works....

Once I asked the SE to be my protectariate (greece) and they accepted. I was very well suprised because they had 25 cities, not losing against egypt and I didn't offer them money. It lasted the whole game, and that was about 60 years.
It was the only time I've got an protectariate.
I managed to get a protecorate, playing as the Romans in EB. They only had their capitol left with 2 theurophoi and 9 (?!?!) units of elephants left. I didnt offer them money, i only gave them their old settlement back. But, as usuall the AI attacked me next turn.
