    Default Triarii

I was wondering...is it just me, or can't u ever recruit Triarii? Coz I played short campaign / long campaign as Julii, and I only had 1 unit of triarii in the beginning & like 4 other units which I bribed from the Scipii...(Geesj I bribed like 12 stacks from Scipii and Brutii (well 11 stacks from Brutii lol) and that for maximum 5000 denarii :O )

well, on the very first campaign i played, it was m/m and i was brutii. i got triarii in my 21 starting cities a good time before marius, made at least 2 armies worth. i never really liked them tho, principii are my pre-marius main all the time. triarii i just throw at enemy general/heavy cav.

triarii are good at holding the line, so while they're engaged in combat i use my pricipes or cavalry to flank the enemy and create a total carnage battlefield

hmm, thats an interesting concept. More similar to the way they really were used than what i do. i just like to throw a couple of spear units on my flanks to proctect from cav flanking, but triarii have more potential than that.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the gaming industry of the years 2Ks, where you code first, and try to think about the game rules afterwards (or, in this case, you don't). That's one of the first problem I noticed with Vanilla...

only once have i got my barracks to a level were i could recruit triarii, and had time to recruit some, but then the reform came so quick that they were instantly obsolete. i think its just a cock-up by CA. you could try editing a text file, make yourself start with a few more, or upgrade a city so you can recruit them. but that may bring the reforms forward aswel....

The reason that they are hardly ever able to recruit is because they need to high of level of barracks. Once the player usually has teched up that far, the reforms occur, thus triarii are no longer on the production list. Although I have on occasion been able to train a few. Although If im not mistaken they take 2 turns to build as well, further reducing the time and amount you have to train.
Most mods fix this by making Triarii recruitable at the second level of barracks.

the reforms occur at a certain level of palace, the last level, so just dont build it and you sholdnt get them

i believe you need the imperial palace to get the barracks to recruit triarii. in fact im pretty sure.

its been a long time since i played vanilla though.

no you need the second to last barracks to recruit the tiarii. the last one gives an extra experience point to them but that won't happen because if you can build the last barracks you've had the marius reforms.

Yes i think that is the case, but regardless of that the reforms always seem to happen very shortly after.

What I suggest is playing Terrae Expugnandae, it is a great mod for vanilla and it lets you recruit Triarii way before the reforms. In fact you can start out with the ability to make them. Trust me youll love it :happy0144

Olmsted over at the official forums outlined how he modded the various barracks levels to work around this, as well as how to use two different versions of a given file (forget which one, thinks its desc_strat) to over ride the effects of the Marius reforms and have them take hold during a campaign when you feel they should happen. Haven't tried it yet myself, and although I was able to train three armies with (what I consider) complete levels of Triarii in my current Julii campaign I'm going to use his method on my next Roman campaign I think. The Marius reforms just seem to come too quickly as no one seems to argue with reading various forums.

Do a search on his name over there and and I'm sure you can find the thread, it was posted just the other day.

I like to use triarii on my flanks (as they are spearmen, they can hold back any flanking maneuvers by enemy cavalry). I usually take about 2 to 4 triarii with me in battle if they're available.

As to recruiting them after the Marius event, the only way I have been able to do that is with the create_unit "city" "roman triarii" 5 1 1 1 cheat code (use 1 1 1 because if you use 8 8 8 it will really start to drain your treasury, I learned that the hard way). I don't like to use cheats, but if you really want triarii after the Maris event, then thats what you have to do.

If you don't want the reforms to come so quick then slow down the population growth in the cities by trying to keep them off of low tax rate and by carefully choosing the temple you build so that it doesn't add a population growth bonus and this should give you the time you need to build your barracks buildings up to the level to make them available.
