Hmm. Looks like Spartacus is finally getting some competition on the swords&action front. (One would have thought Game of thrones, but meh..)

Quite like the song, I can see it working as a backdrop to something totally out of context but they seem to have missed the good bit in the trailer...

Not only agree but happy to invoke the wrath of GoT fanboys by saying Vikings is better. Better acting, better scripting, better use of budget, three episodes and there's been more action than the entire of GoT. Just better. Ugh, yeh, the fighting is more realistic in Vikings..

Vikings doesn't have a budget that really compares with the other two, but I think both it and GoT are pretty good shows.

Spartacus however in the acting, writing, special effects department however is no where close to either. But you know it has the most gratuitious tits and decapitations per capita so of course you guys idolize it. That and because it isn't "ruining the books" (like how Walking Dead is "ruining the crappy comics" it is based on).

At least in Xena the gods are more down to earth.

That was my point, Vikings is obviously way short on budget by comparison but makes very good use of every penny..

the tits I could do without tbh. You should have said 'per head' it would have been witty.. TWD has some very low points..

From danger of sounding like a broken record, the Writing of Spartacus always have been better than GoT. The phasing of GoT is such a nightmare. They do have some exceptional actors though.

I do find the lesser focus on sexually deviant freaks in Vikings somewhat refreshing actually.

You guys are going by the false assumption that GoT is a "swords and action" kind of show but it's not. GoT has swords and action but it's not about those things. GoT is more of a politics/character/drama kind of show and is much better compared to the likes of HBO's Rome.

In contrast Spartacus is a gratuitous cgi frag-fest based on the popularity of film(s) like 300 (it constantly regurgitates 300's visual gimmicks) where hitting a man on the upper back with a blunt shaft causes a huge spray of blood and everyone constantly swears to make the show appear dark and edgy. So apples and oranges.

This Vikings thing seems interesting though, will try it.

Well compared to the likes of HBO's Rome, GoT is just sad, so there.

Comparing Spartacus to Rome would be more apt, since they are both historical fiction dramas about Rome. GoT isn't perfect, but at least it has a majority of truly talented actors whereas on Spartacus actors like John Hannah (Battiatus, Johnathan in The Mummy series), Peter Mensah (Oenomaus), Nick Tarabay (Ashur), and Lucy Lawless give breakout performances... because everyone around them cannot act at all. If you look at them in other shows you will see they are not on par with the talent that HBO regularly draws to its shows.

I'd compare Spartacus to Banshee, premium cable has always had shows like these which for a long time served as a hastily thrown together delivery method for softcore porn. They upped the budget a little and landed a few "legitimate" actors and now try to market them as dramas (but they keep the gratuitous sex and violence as the center pieces). They likely still budget more for unheard of actresses to take off their clothes than trying to lure better acting talent or writers to the shows. Starz is just not capable of producing quality dramatic series on par with HBO. Spartacus is not their Rome, it is not even close.

Anyways Vikings is a good show, and doesn't have to worry about any of that. They aren't trying to be like GoT in terms of dialogue, scripting, production value etc. they are just trying to tell the story of Ragnar Lodbrok in an entertaining serial. They succeeded at that, the turnaround for History's historical fiction really came with The Kennedys, continued with the Hatfields and the McCoys, and now is at its pinnacle with the Vikings. I hope the show is a sucess so that we get more series like this, eventually who knows they could be a much better home for these types of shows than even HBO.

Well lets stop this discussion. I'm sort of tired of it.

As a rather special thing at the beach just before the fight, the Scandinavians and the Saxons switched over to old norse/old english respectively. I've never seen this done before, so I thought it was a nice touch to further illuminate the cultural clash. I wonder if this is how they are going to do all intercultural conversation.

Yes it is a nice touch, but I didn't get how Ragnar was able to communicate with the Saxons? How does he know old english?

He learnt from the monk. It was a pretty significant time skip from the moment the monk got to the farm and to the point that they left for England again.

I thought the third episode was great, the first raid was really anticlimactic (although it was to the vikings too) but I'm hoping that there will be a real battle or something for the town.

I wonder what else the earl will do, it seems like from the first episode they have put a sign on the guy reading "this is the villain"

In one of the trailers Ragnars guys fought Cavalery, i thought it might be frankish one, but it seems the first seasons seems to concentrate on England. In the same trailer he stands before another king and he spoke english, the same as a Bishop in another Trailer.

    Not the European version.

I have just one beef with the show and it's the same with Spartacus: No armor scavenging. Armor and weapons, especially swords, were expensive. If you're poor you don't have armor, but if you find it, you damn straight will either use it or sell it to someone who can use it.

And yet practically nobody uses armor of any sort. No body armor, no helmets. WTF? Over.

One of the best moments in Spartacus was when they were trying to save Crixus from the Arena and set it on fire. The appearance of the gladiators clad in legionary armor, helmets and all, was awesome.

Vikings weren't big on armour and their sword making skills were as advanced as anybodies. Most Viking 'raiders' were not warriors they were farmers, it could be argued that the use of swords wasn't any everyday thing while using an axe was..

We've seen a small war-band on raiding missions, I wouldn't expect to see much of a professional soldiers equipment or carrying heavy armour around that has little value..
