William's men had formed the rearguard of the crusading army all the way through France; but the advance had been deathly slow for him and his men. They had stopped when they can, doing their best to be abandoned by the crusaders. They succeeded, slipping away not long before the borders of the Holy Roman Emperor's domains in Italy were reached, turning back into France and heading north into Normandy. 500 men awaited passage back to England, not willing to follow a cause that was not blessed by the pope.
