    Default Germanic lures during battle

Germanic peoples had a type of ancient wind instrument called "lur". The lur was used during the Nordic Bronze Age, the Viking age and probably also during the Pre-Roman Iron Age.

    From Wiki:

The earliest references to an instrument called the lur come from Icelandicsagas, where they are described as war instruments, used to marshal troops and frighten the enemy.

Wouldn't it be epic to hear those unique sounds as the Germanics storm out of the forest...?

Might be, but as you can see here, even roman musicians are yet to see. .

I have honestly heard this somewhere before.I think it is epic... It is an instrument that would strike fear in me if i was in the roman army and waiting for the charge of the germans everyone is talking about. The romans were terrified of them and rightly so.

You should really email this in to CA to get this sound added to the germans.Even if it was a unit to boost morale or give a charge bonus like the druids in Rome I.

Let's hope they give musical instruments of the different cultures the attention they deserve.

Agreed, it is a very intimidating sound. Maybe there were something sounding like that in the Lord of the rings movies?

    I think I'll send a mail

Ohhh, I thought you meant the Germans 'luring' the Romans into a trap or something
    Get to the trireme!

Haha yea I was coming in here expecting a discussion about luring enemies into a trap somehow. However, I do like the idea of the war horn or whatever you want to call it. Maybe it could be like the "inspire"ability of the general or something. It'd inspire your troops and strike fear in the hearts of your enemies.

I liked hearing that deep horn blow as I charged all my heavy barbarian infantry and cavalry over a hill down towards the Romans. I'd like to see these horn calls put back into the game.

That Lurs sound reminded me of the music from the dance scene (with lots of more 'pagan' themes than 'Christian') from "Red Riding Hood" (2011) with Amanda Seyfried.

Fever Ray - The Wolf (From "Red Riding Hood") [HQ]

The singer is Björk, by the way. But I swear if the real sound of lurs is like in the OP's YouTube video, then I heard lurs in the "Red Riding Hood" film. The sound wasn't really so scary so much as very basal... visceral... of course guttural, raw, energetic, and animalistic. I found it to be a refreshing scene - pagan dance and song in contrast to more staid "Christian" or "civilized" life. The scene in the film shows some actual horn players (I have to go see it again myself, they looked like long curved horns just like those in the OP's YouTube video). I don't suppose the filmmakers deliberately chose to include lurs, if those were lurs, to reflect a more "Germanic" or "Nordic" pagan/"barbarian" theme.

EDIT: Ah, here the scene is, for your viewing pleasure.

Impressive sound. This can be included via a simple trumpeteer soldier in most Germanic units, and includes a blast horn ability that boosts some stats like attack or charge bonus. In reality it should be just an aesthetic variant of the Gauls' trumpeters carrying the Carynx.

The great thing about this is really giving the player the perception that fighting various barbarians as Rome actually feels like you are fighting many different kinds, rather than just lots of the same looking barbarians. PC games like Total War have only the visual and auditory aspects of media to give to consumers, and naturally variety of sounds and diverse looking units will give players the feeling that some factions will look and feel different than others, whether by playing or fighting against them. Simple things like Germans carrying lurs and Gauls carrying the carynx achieves that.

Yes I entirely agree, CA should include authentic sounding horns prior to battles. If you want to hear a good example in how these built up fear, listen to the soundtrack for Jaws. The music starts quietly and builds the tension by the inclusion of horns getting louder and louder.

The Germans were notable for the pre battle rhythmic chants that struck fear into the enemy. These chants would probably have started with a similar deep low hum probably accompanied with the Lur and built up to a crescendo of screaming and yelling. Such battle chants were adapted by the Romans themselves after fighting the Germanic tribes..

In Short, we need Musicians Back in R2TW...

In Shogun 2, There is no Musician animation and Instrument Model (Although there is Musician Slot in the unit_stats_land, if you peek into the data.pack; So its there, but unused). In Effect, You can hear Horagai blows and Taiko beats, but they came from nowhere...

If Germanic Tribes have Lures, Then Gaelic Tribes should have Carnyx, and for Cornua for The Romans...

What are Their Hellenic, Steppe, Iberian, Numidian, Persian equivalent?

Warcries also need to be culture-specific: For Instance, Macedonian Warcry should sound something like ALALALALALAI!
