    Default Defence of Gondor

I have noticed that Gondor has three defence zones. Osgiliath, Cair Andros and the river, minas tirith and tarnost and the tarnost hills (i nicknamed that like the weather hills of arnor)..
What i have noticed is that if gondor has been pushed back to tarnost and they lose it, even if they win several battles, Eight times out of Ten in many campaigns whether playing as gondor or the Ai playing, gondor fights what i call a long defeat.
    Has anybody else noticed this?

Yeah i've noticed anytime they lose a settlement on west side of river they start to lose. Cair Andros falls followed by west bank then the white city and so forth.

In all fairness, this is really what ought to happen lorewise. Gondor never had a real chance to defeat Mordor and its allies in arms. It makes for a more satisfying game as a good faction, to rescue Gondor before it's defeated. As an evil faction, you have more incentive to move quickly before Mordor seizes Gondor and gobbles up the rest of Middle Earth without you .

Dont get me wrong, im not complaining. In fact i think its epic. Seeing gondor fight against impossible odds. As arnor ive recaptured Minas Tirith, Cair Andros and Osgiliath. Gondor sent a diplomat asking for them. I politely sad noooooooooooooooooooooo.... To be fair i also conquered what was rohan and they did the same, and i replied the same...

All im saying is that when you get to the Tarnost/Dol Amroth Point, its game over for gondor. Im on turn 131 and despite gondor being out numbered 4-1, they held on till recently.

The long defeat as i call it makes the game fun. Seeing how long they can resist for. What i get confused about it why does boromir hang out in the west? Dude your kingdom is falling. Your brother and father are dead... Get moving...

I've noticed that plenty of times, the Gondor AI manages to capture the Ithilien and then Minas Morgul.

What happens in the south depends mostly on the Mordor AI. If the Mordor AI somehow manages to start a fight with Dale, the Silvans or Rohan, Mordor will attack that faction more. This gives Gondor momentum to capture a good chunck of Mordor first and then Harad. If Mordor focuses on Gondor, Gondor is forced to focus on Mordor. Then when the Harad AI manages to cross the Anduin it's basically over for Gondor if you don't help them.
    In it for the rep.

I think even as player if you donīt play aggressive against harad from the beginning on you are simply lost against them if you are not succesful against mordor.

Agrred yet boromirs army never does anything. It always stays in the west of gondor staring at the trees. At least bard's and thengel does something but boromir's? Nothing. Whats he doing? Making loves to the trees, having a picnic with his men. On vacation? Perhaps its a bug. That or he's a moron. I knew i liked faramir more..

Yeah, it appears Gondor always needs saved around turn 100 a couple of times earlier. I like playing HE as saviors of ME, I never hold much territory, but it never seems to fail I end up with the bulk of strength facing Harad and Mordor. In the North Gundaband and MM used too fall quickly it has taken some rather heavy modding of their troop availability, costs and starting settlement conditions too keep them viable and the Northern front entertaining. I play MOS with the expanded map and I must say Gondor does seem to do better as an ai faction. Arnor is a frigging juggernaut though.

Arnor really faces no enemies as I defend them and I have certain rules that I can take no territory that is not directly adjacent to a starting territory, exceptions being Lindon qualifications, Tol Anfalas and Ost i Gil in Mirkwood. This allows Arnor to expand basically unmolested, by destroying Dunland and returning Rohan's territories lost too Isengard, I find I usually turn the West into a nice safe place, for Arnor. Keeping Dale alive from a single Fortress in Mirkwood facing both Rhun and Mordor is a bit of fun, Dale honsetly must have the worst military schools in Arda and the worst prioritization in recruitment one could imagine. While Ruhn's Golden horde is on the move they are recruiting a disturbing number of first tier units.

Lol, that's because Dale's military roster generally SUCKS until the very late game. They need (iirc) a third level barracks to get anything better than militia units, their infantry is outclassed by the equivalent Rhun units at every level, and their cavalry is terrible until they can get earls. Plus, if Dale isn't able to hold the Rhovanion regions, they miss out on the units there which can bolster them in the midgame. The only relatively decent units they have for 75% of the game are their archers, which the ai doesn't use very well.
