Icon9 A Whole Lot of Mess (patch problems & CTD)

Hey TWCenter! My first post here.

As you all know the MODs for M2:TW are all very impressive so I decided to re-install one of my favourite games of all time to play them. And that is how it all started.

Installed M2:TW, patched to 1.2, tried and failed multiple times to patch to 1.3 (invalid or missing file data_0.pack). Ok screw it I thought I'll just install Kingdoms. Did so (though I don't think it did update - it just installed the kingdoms campaigns) and patched to 1.5. Installed my mod (this one the very impressive "Call of Warhammer" mod to indulge my inner child) and their neccessary english translations and played. Woopee it works wonderfully and enjoying the truly impressive detail they have worked into it. Played a few turns no problem... and then came my first battle; my sturdy dwarfs ready to crush the undead hordes of the Vampire Counts. Drooling at the thought of the coming slaughter I was sadly disappointed to CTD with an error. Reloaded, same problem. Ok re-install time. Repeat same process as before ONLY this time I did not install the mod. Try just kingdoms I thought. Opened up a glorious Crusader campaign only the run into "Medieval II Total War has encountered an unxepected error and will now exit". I senesed a trend happening here. Then I tried just Medieval II only for that to encounter the same error on the initial loading screen every time. This was 4 days ago and ever since I've been trawling the internet for solution and countless re-installs, I still have no progress. To cover the obvious I will (try to) name all of the fixes I have tried below:

**NOTE: Almost every install and patch had it's own problems, with missing or invalid files all over the shop, usually solved with CCleaner and a re-try or at worst another fresh install, EXCEPT in the case of patch 1.3 which had never worked. I also made sure to delete everything before a fresh re-install.
    - Ran in administrtor
    - Disabled UAC
    - Disabled Daylight Savings Time
    - deleted those pesky geography_new files using the unpacker
    - Changed install pathway: first removing the \SEGA and then just installing into C:\Games
    - Deleted all map.rwm files from data\world\maps\
    - Deleted strings.bin files from data\text\ folder
    - Checked for .tmp extentions on pack folders after patching
    - Disabled the advisor
    - Even tried deleting every trace from User\Appdata folder
    - A few others which I can't even remember
    - Sacrificed a few small animals to the dark gods in bloody ceremonies for deliverance

    So my question is:
    1) Is it because I cannot seem to patch to 1.3? And if so what haven't I tried that can fix it?
    2) How can I play these damned battles with CTD as my virtual-bloodthirst needs satisfaction.

If I remember anything else I'll post it and thanks for any help you give in advance!!

    **Quick edit:
    - Kingdoms only CTD when trying to go onto Battlemap as it does with my MOD. Only the original M2:TW crashes on the initial loading screen before I even see a menu!!

a note on patchs you have to be sure to download and install the patch provided for your game.
any downloaded version can differ slightly(regional , DRM etc)

EDit: so were did you get your game? and is it something like the gold edition?

Version 1.4 is the default version of M2TW Kingdoms. People with Kingdoms installed will have had their regular M2TW automatically patched up to 1.3 as well.

Well I bought the game when it first came out, only I didn't want to go searching through boxes so I torrented it (bad I know) and the patches were included. It is not the Gold version.

How can you tell what region etc. the patch was made for? The readme or something?

    Thanks for your reply!

Sorry, but we cannot provide support for illegal copies. That's probably where all of the problems are coming from too. Install the real game.
