Huangdi: Total War?
I don't know if this has been heavily discussed already, but I think the Spring and Autumn/Warring States periods of Chinese history would be a great setting for a Total War game.
I'm picturing a game in two sections. One set in the Spring and Autumn period...
factions:
Yan
Qi
Lu
Qin
Jin
Chu
Wu
Song
Zheng
Barbarian factions:
Yue
Rong
Di
Man
Xiongnu
Imperial Capital:
Zhou
Several rebel factions representing the minor states of Cao, Chen, Cai, Xu, Ba, and Shu.
Warfare in this section would be based largely on chariots with infantry in a supporting role.
The next section might be triggered by someone conquering Cao, Chen, Cai, and Xu, or Qi conquering Lu (or the other way around). It would bring on the Warring States Era. Warfare would thence be based on massive infantry and crossbow formations. States conquering cities from (or winning battles against) the Rong, Di, or Xiongnu would gain access to horse archers. The state of Jin would also split into Zhao, Han, and Wei (this might be tricky to implement, though).
There might be a tech tree as well, where factions could research different paths and reform their armies adaptively. Also, there could be some representation of the rising philosophies of Confucianism, Mohism, Daoism, and Legalism.
What do you guys think?
The winner would be the player who unites all the Chinese factions, plus the city of Luoyang.
sorry I already posted this somewhere. I thought it didn't post because I got a message reading "post denied"
