Which clan is easiest on hard difficulty? as I tried date clan and was struggling as my armies upkeep cost alot. The computer players armies were too strong and too big and they few so fast.

Well shimazu is regarded as the easiest clan in general, cause you have acces to 4 trade nodes, and when realm divide occurs you dont have to worry about your western regions.
My first game (and pretty much only in vanilla S2) on hard was hojo. They start with two provinces: one of which is gold, the other smithing. But you are always a bit dependent on how the big neighbouring clans (takeda, uesegi, tokugawa) get and how well you get along
Otomo might not be that hard after the first few turns, because cheap and early guns mean you can hold castles against huge odds and Nanban ships mean you can easily control the seas. Plus, you can incite rebellions just like the Ikko-Ikki without having to give up your Metsuke.
I'm getting the hang of the campaign on hard as date clan I have 13 regions and realm divide been triggered. I had a long war with usiegi now they are my vassal I got two allies Hojo and the shimazu.
The. Chosoakbe, ikko ikki, hatakeyama and the ashikaga shogunate are at war with me and I'm gonna have a long war as they have big armies and loads of land apart from the Chosokabe and ashikaga thier armies will be big but not much land not sure how I can wipe these clans out without losing to many men and money.
I found my Oda (ashigaru only) campaign to be fairly easy. Having 6-8 stacks of Gold Armor Yari and Gold Accuracy Bow/Matchlock ashigaru at RD is very useful. I did pay attention a lot to diplomacy; the start of RD was kinda rough because you do take lots of casualties due to low quality. I would put Chosokabe or Shimazu as the easiest factions too, because they are isolated in their Islands and near the trade nodes.
Takeda have been made infinitely easier by the random trade mechanic where you can extort thousands for trade agreements because you have horses. I've tried it twice now and each time I can just stomp all over Chubu / Tohoku well before 1560's and that's on defense (never DoW'd) so not really trying.
Beware of the Chosokabe. Being on Shikoku means you can have only four trade ports severely limiting any bonus you get from rushing to get the trade nodes near Kyushu
I'm playing as shimazu on hard I tried to play as hojo but the oda, ikko ikki, and other minor clans were growing in strength quite fast.my armies were weak I couldn't afford better units like katana samurai or bow samurai etc I could only afford yari ashigaru and weaker units and they would rout so early in battle.
Shimazu have the best start position, the best access to trade routes and the best katana samurai. Even on legendary a child could win this campaign.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are so certain of themselves, but wiser people are full of doubts.

Shimazu easiest clan of the game imho. probably date too
I'm playing as shinazu and got bessho clan as an ally they are quite powerful trying to build up my Eco bu If I have a war with them I don't get mug income coz I'm trading with them so I'm trying to build up farms etc to help fund my war.
i got it saved at a certain point and one of my cities is underiege and I win the battle I forgot to save it again but I do it when im in a good position and making lots of income but my trade routes get attacked loads I'm having to defend them and ports alot so money been spent on repairing ships, building farms and roads etc I only need maybe 6 regions to win but I want bessho as a long term ally to fight our enemies all the way through.
Shame I cannot upload my save so someone could put it right for me lol I always end up in defeat yes realm divide already triggered.
Oda are the easiest clan on all difficulties in my opinion. Even on Legendary they're more like a sedate VH campaign. Inspired Endeavours and Call to Arms within the first turn, an easy route to 4-5 provinces, Warhorses right on your doorstep and the ability to churn out stack after stack of improved ashigaru. They also have their own "three golden kings" provinces (Owari, Omi, Kii) within easily obtainable proximity.
I completed it now but I think very hard and legendary I'm going to really struggle to do and it's also to unlock steam achievements which I just can't do as I find it too hard on those level.
I cannot get steam achievement unless I complete it on harder difficulty though I'm now trying fall of the samurai on legendary to unlock a steam achievement but that difficulty is way too hard for me but I keep trying and failing as tosa and I think the computer players armies are overpowered as soon as they charge at you your army runs away and then it's defeat after defeat after defeat.
In my opinion any clan can be easy depending on how you play in terms of: diplomacy, getting your back to the wall (like Date and Shimazu), getting trade nodes, using your agents effectively, hitting RD at the right time and proper provincial managment. Some factions start in nice positions but tend to be at a disadvantage later in the game (Chosokabe as mentioned before) so it's all up to you to decide how successful your campaign will be.
