If you look at this screenshot, it says that the city must rely on reaching a certain population limit until they can be upgraded. If that is the case, then what decides when the castles can be upgraded?

you can simply upgrade it as soon as you have the money for it... I guess. I have no other factor on my mind concerning castles... maybe how many units you have trained there... no, nonsence...
Er, the population of the city? As well as the amount of cash you've got of course, just the same as RTW.
but this is not the city! that is the bugger, it is not the city, hense it cannot grow in population.
I take it that the castles has a different trigger for upgrades. However, cities must rely upon reaching a certain opulation level before they can upgrade
I'm not sure about this. The population should reflect the number of people in the region, not the actual people inside the castle. In a region you can build either a city or a castle and in both instances you will receive taxes. IMO the city simply means the population growth in the region is faster and you get more buildings dedicated to economy (and technology). Otherwise the castle governed region should still have the population number and the upgrading of the castle can depend on it.Originally Posted by Giurza
yes indeed, but it should be quite injust to tie a CASTLE which is purelly military structure to a populations growth... don't you think...Originally Posted by Space Voyager

If I recall correctly, you can choose to build EITHER castles or cities, and I'm pretty sure I read you can change from one to the other. Therefore, I suspect growth of both are based on the same thing, population of the city (which is a generalization of the regions population). If the preceeding is accurate, the more relevant question would then become, what is the process for changing from one to the other?

Probably very easy, you will always have a convert to city/castle button in the build menu.Originally Posted by Mikelus Trento
As you can see from the screenshot it will cost money and according to CA you will lose all castle/city specific buildning in the process(and no refund I take it).
If you are talking about something else then :sign_oops
Bear in mind that these castles and cities represent an entire province. You will still get taxes/population growth from every province, as not everyone will live in the city or castle, obviously. Aren't the cities and castles there simply as a means to control the provinces, as opposed to having to micromanage entire provincial production?Originally Posted by Giurza
I do agree but there is another possible view - a castle is a militaristic structure but it is also a home of the regional lord. Not many kings had castles belonging to them all over the country. The lord gathers taxes and those taxes (the part that is not submitted to the king) pay the maintenance. So the population CAN have a big influence on the castle.Originally Posted by Giurza
Otherwise you can say that a king can build up a city even if has little population. The houses will be empty, so what?
Oh, sorry I miss-read. What must happen then is, when you upgrade your cities it also allows you to upgrade your castles like any other building can be upgraded when you expand the city. I.e. you choose to do it manually on the buildings menu.
Maybe a Castle will depend on the quality of buildings in that settlement, using RTW buildings as an example, if you build a militia barracks it may unlock the next level of castle, then Legion Barracks would lead to the next level and so on. If not maybe the population thing, but at a lower degree to a city
Hmm what does the green arrow mean, which is situated between Ireland and Britain.?
