Default How to make an ally turn on me?

    Hey!

First I have to say that I love this mod. I've played several, but never one as well made as this one. Cheers!

Second, I'm playing as Isengard and early I decided to try and avoid fighting. I've managed it well so far. I've allied Rohan, Gondor, both Elven factions and Arnor. I've bought out many of Rohan's settlements, they've spent their money on military fighting Mordor and now I feel like they're ready to fall. How should I proceed to make them declare war on me so that I won't lose my reputation and their ally, Gondor, will part with me?

tl;dr: How can I make an ally declare war on me so that our common allies will favour me and I'll keep my reputation?

    Thanks!

mmm will be difficult, first you have to cancel alliance and trade rights with them (through diplomacy), but if IIRC this will bring down you reputation anyway, than if the relations are already not so good and you own some of their settlements for victory conditions they will quite surely attack you.

Will Gondor remain on your side? good question

It will depend on relations between you and them and Rohan and them.

    Hope it helps

Do you have military access with them? If you don't, then send out armies to enter their lands all the time. Also are they at war with anyone? If they are, and if you have enough money, then buy their regions that borders other factions. The AI always wants war, and they mostly attack factions that border their regions.

AFAIK AI actually attacks only border regions and only those within 50 tiles from it's settlement. (That's why AI never get to the New World in vanilla.)

I believe that, as long as you cancel the alliance, if you leave one of your cities unguarded, the AI will be very tempted to invade.

Thanks for your help! I'll try buying off their borders and see what they'll do. Maybe I could get very good relations with them and make them attack Gondor. I'll post back and say how it goes.

Not 100% sure how this would affect your other allies, but what about requesting an invasion of a Rohan territory? Would that allow revoking the alliance without diplomatic penalties?

I haven't tried, but I suppose that if Sauron accepted it Gondor would cancel our alliance if I joined it.

The AI usually sides with the ally that gets attacked. Reasons for this depend on:

    1. Relations
    2. Trade rights/Military access
    3. Strength of your own faction (the AI wouldn't side with the weaker faction, would they?)
And for evils: If Sauron holds you in high esteem or not.

Just what I've gathered from the site. So if you want Gondor to stay as your ally, make sure you get attacked!

    ok, so here's another point:
    Idk if this helps, but:

    1st | cancel alliance
    2nd | cancle trade rights

[this will bring your reputation down, but - if you are wealthy enough...]

3rd | donate money and regions to Gondor (or whom ever)

[this will bring your reputation up again - but there's no ensurance if high enough to part with Rohan]

Revoke alliance, trade rights and military access. Send units roaming in their territory, this will quicky drop your relations.

Keep a settlement on the border empty of military units, or almost empty: AI usually can't resist the temptation.

But maybe the Good vs Evil feature will get in your wheels. Don't know, honestly.
It's only after you have lost everything, that you are free to do anything.
