If you could, would you change your favorite films in any way?
I'd only make slight alterations to the Lord of the Rings trilogy to make it closer to Tolkien's vision of Middle-Earth, the only scene i'd really redo would be the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Here's how I see it. First of all, when Faramir comes retreating across the Plains, he is pursued by the lead elements of Sauron's army, along with the Ringwraiths. Instead of Gandalf alone sallying forth from Minas Tirith, Gandalf along with the Swan Knights lead by Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth, a cool character who was in the book but sadly omitted in the film charge out of the gates, sweeping away the pursuing orcs and scaring off the Nazgul, then retreating back into the city along with Faramir's force, but Faramir would be wounded, as in book. Thus we get rid of the pointless charge of Faramir's little army which is completely aTolkien addition. With this covered, we move on to the battle proper, as the Orcs begin their big assault, i'd give the men more credit, showing the Gondorrim (which just sounds better than "Gondorians") killing more Orcs than in PJ's original version, so many times the "Might of Gondor" is praised in the films, why not show that might in the discipline and training of the Gondorrim warriors. Now the battle progresses, with heavy casualties being inflicted on the Orcs, but Sauron's army gradually pushing the Men of Gondor back. After that long sequence, we come to Grond, now the great ram breaks down the gate as normal, but instead of Trolls, the Witch-King rides in, behind him, but still outside Minas Tirith, are the hordes of the Orcs. Gandalf comes forward, and he and the Witch-King have their little exchange, as the battle is about to begin, we hear a cock crowing, and the dawn coming. And with the dawn, the Rohirrim army charges up over the hill, Theoden's speech being given earlier in the film during a sequence in the Druadan Forest, like in the book. The Rohirrim charge down the hill and sweep into the flank of the Orcish army. Now we cut to a scene in the Minas Tirith after the Witch-King flies away. Imrahil comes before the Gondor army and gives some sort of speech, something like
"Look Men of Gondor, Rohan rides to our aide, let us not let Theoden-King fight alone. Forward for the White City"
Then with a great warcry, the Gondorrim charge forward out of the gate. We cut to an Orc who had been watching the Rohirrim turn his head, right before the Gondorrim cut through the Orcs with their mighty charge. We cut to a pair of Gondor spearmen attacking a troll, the troll falls down and one of the spearmen jumps up on the troll's chest and skewers the beast through the throat. After a sequence of fighting scenes with the main characters (Eomer, Theoden, Gandalf, Imrahil and Eowyn and Merry), we have the Witch-King attack sequence and fight with Eoywn, just as it normally went, but instead of "I am no man" Eowyn would say her lines from the book, which were damn near Shakespearean, and would do so before the fight, which was a lot more dramatic in my opinion. After the Witch-King sequence, we have the Black Ships coming up the river, but instead of the Army of the Dead, we get Aragorn, the Dunadain, Elrond's Sons along with Gondor's Southern Army. After this, we have another Action Sequence, and then we get the Orcs retreating. As Aragorn and Eomer meet on the battlefield, we see Sauron's reserves (with the Mumakil) coming up, along with the rallied main force. Both armies charge, and meet in the middle of the Fields with a great clash. As the mighty hosts begin their epic battle, we fade to black, occasionally we refade in to slow motion shots of the main characters and the orcs fighting, we get about 5 of those, and then one long slow-mo shot of the entire battle raging.
And that's how i'd do the Battle of the Pelennor Fields
