Here is a live community that was started the beginning of the year.
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/THGWs
IMO, its because steam has became quite more convienent for players to communicate Person to Person, while forums, its a tad bit hassle in registering and what not. Plus all the language barriers and time zones and what not.
Shogun 2 multiplayer, however does not suck. When someone screams out they lost due to high veterans its a huge misconception, they are only comparing their unit 1 to 1 OFC the inferior unit will lose in a melee fight due to stats, What most players ignore is the many things they can use to their advantage, such as looking into their control settings and start customizing them, learning about the preset formations, using multiple groups. Learning to understand how the controls work, is part of being able to help manage your army, if you cant manage your army, you are stuck with few options if you wanna micro and macro.
But yes, forums are a bad indicator of how many are actually playing on multiplay unfortunately. You gotta do some searching, and find out whose active and what not.
Most of TW forums are SP oriented, and mainly ignored by active MP community.
Considering MP state itself - it is as alive as ever, you will always find 1v1 game on MM. There are certain problems, including bad ladder design and steep learning curve, but community is alive and kicking. Game is too fun to abandon despite all shortcomings.
Take a look at my MP news to get a better feel of what is happening around, and keep in mind, that I am only covering fraction of MP life.
Last week in TW MP playlist.
CA screwed themselves when they went money mental.
They completely ignored all cries from the MP community (let's not forget that people have been MPing battles since Rome) and introduced ridiculous DLCs primarily for the MP market in order to make a quick buck.
Customer service Horsham style.
There is so much wrong with your post, Manowar.
First of all, game developing companies have to be money mental as any companies. That's the whole point - they live by selling games.
Next, introducing DLCs is no harm by itself, and especially for S2 - DLCs changed nothing. Ladder was broken before any DLC came out.
Based on some of his other recent posts he just likes whining without any basis.
Shogun 2 multiplayer is the best the series has seen, and while it has issues it's still very much alive and very playable. The ladder rankings are horribly broken though, and were from day one. But not like that affects the core gameplay at all, except perhaps through a lack of matching up people based on skill numbers.
Shogun 2 multiplayer may be the best the series has seen, but that fails to recognize that it's still poor compared more established multiplayer games and communities.![]()

I don't like to reopen threads, but I honestly think there are some legit points in the original thread, which I'll reopen.
poor matchmade design (especially the drop-hack issue) and
cav+bowcav spam (both old issues of which the latest patches failed to take care of) are, what killed it for me
Does anyone ever play the avatar mode? I waited for about 4 hours and not one battle in a 1v1 5k mode. I never played the mp mode until now thinking why not give it a try only to find out that it was going now where and that unlocking bow samurai wasn't going to happen.
theres a good amount of people in battle list...
Yeah I found out I was on at a odd time in the day when no one was playing the avatar mode. Still i am having fun losing to those darn mounted gunners![]()
Yes, that unit seems to be more of a game design miss, rather than a hit^^
Still, manageable if handled with caution: keep bow cav/laght cav in reserve just to get that unit later. Don't throw those away.
There are not that many player who are patient enough to play using cav+bowcav spam, as every game goes for 20-50 minutes of very repetitive micro.
So, in the end, encountering such a spammer is indeed pretty rare occasion.
On the other hand, there are enough people, who only need couple of unfortunate games to get motivation for angry forum posting^^
I have played Shogun Multi since it came out and up until the Ikko Ikki DLC came out, the past week I decided to play some MM and battle list again to see how the game developed, have some fun and remember old times.
After about a week of playing and 30+ battles( most of which I won), here are the reasons that make me want to quit the game again:
1 - Sword units seem to be almost ineffective vs Yari and Naginata units, much less then before, it feels that they lost their role.
2 - There is no limit on how many Matchlock units a player can bring.
3 - Unbalanced DLC units such as Mounted Gunners, Heavy gunners (aka - RPG Wielders).
4 - Retainers that are completely unbalanced by being DLC only and by being random post battle drops - those who got them have a clear advantage.
5 - Players that put small or medium unit size in their options, just to make MM battles into Matchlock heaven with tiny units, CA just made a huge mistake with this one.
6 - The whole DLC and retainer mumbo jumbo seem to have thrown off the unit balance altogheter by now, there are no more roles for units it seems, only stats and how to boost them.
7 - The game is out for more then 2 years by now and some retainers are still not working.
8 - Units that have no correlation with History break all immersion.
The game is still fun, but for me it feels more like Empire or Napoleon. I hope they will make a better job on Rome 2.
i love how most of what you said is utter bull****, sword units are the pinnacle of the melee force if you seen "above average" players play, youd notice they use lvl 2 nodachis or lvl 8-9 kat sams, theres a limit to how many matchlocks you can bring, "unbalanced dlc units" Heavy gunners cost 1.2k and they arent that good, and your calling them UNBALANCED? sure makes sense. Might as well just say your melee units are underpowered for being unable to dodge bullets when they are in range. "the whole dlc and retainer mumbo jumbo" well now yours re-stating the same points you just made at 3 and 4. Believe it or not, theres no such thing as a KATANA Samurai, nor Naginata samurai nor Yari samurai. The army was never divided into such categories, katanas werent used so often, yaris were pretty much the basic weapon, naginatas were mainly used by monks and women. The multiplayer shouldnt correlate with history at all, so I don't see how that has anything to do with balance.
There is no need to teach me about the troop types in Japan of that period, I am quite aware that there were no Katana Samurai or the other different distictions, but for me these units feel more "Legit" then Warrior Nuns and RPG Heavy Gunners. My statment was towards the Sword units losing their role, not about how historicaly accurate they are.
In my post I only express my personal opinion, stating things that make me dislike the game to the point that I quit playing it.
THECRAZYCAT - you should relax.
Come to think of it, maybe it is this Crazed atitude on the forum, of attacking in a disrespectful manner instead of discussing, that caused this forum to die out...
