Thats because Vanilla AI sucks. If you want to play vanilla with improved AI, just download the Darth formations 16 super pack, Link is here:

Just follow the instructions after download and you'll have AI that can actually beat you as well as better reinforcments AI. :happy0144

What did punctuation ever do to you?
I'm no grammarian, but it was hard to understand what you were trying to say. You can choose whether your army is under AI control, but sometimes I forget to do it. Were the Greeks your enemy or your ally?
The AI isn't awesome, but it is okay. I wouldn't trust them with a major army, but in one recent battle they surprised me. I was thinking of quitting and reloading (I had saved before the battle) because the AI took control of most of my army, but they did a good job of flanking and seperating the enemy army. I helped, but they did okay.
Of course, most of the time they do something awful. And generally, you could do much better. But another time the AI helped me win a sieige - my forces, a nice balanced 1/2 stack and reinforcements of one unit of javelin men. I had the skirmishers, but not the army. They did pretty good.
The AI is one of the least liked parts of RTW - it isn't good enough. The different difficulty settings change some things, but the strategy is still the same. Actually, the only thing that the difficulty does is give the soldiers statistic bonuses, not actually making the AI smarter.

Re: computer control is awful
I go to great lengths to never let the AI control any of my generals or important units, but I find that the AI can be trusted with cav archers.
Once my real army reaches a full stack, I start creating a second full stack of cav archers, without a general, they just follow my main army around and if I get attacked, I call them in and they do what they're supposed to. Likewise, when I attack, I move the cav archer stack to the side of my opponent, and then call them in as AI reinforcements.
They're fast enough to actually join battles before they end, and the AI is good enough at skirmishing that they can generally be trusted not to get completely obliterated.

Re: computer control is awful
letting the AI control ur reinforments is not good at all. Most of the time at the end of the battle they finally get to ur army. Its a waste unless they actually fight with you, then theytake to many casualties because they arn't that smart.

Re: computer control is awful
I know what you mean. I once wanted to have a huge battle when I attacked Rome, and I had 3 full stack armies in the battle. During the siege, the AI puts my guys right in range of their archers, and then they also manage to kill off one of my best generals. That got me so angry. I went back to where I saved the game before the battle, and then I fought it with only 1 army (and got less casualties too). Still, it gets me angry that I can't have a huge battle in peace (ironic to say that) without the AI messing things up
