    Default I need to edit squalor.

    Are any aspects of squalor moddable, or are they all hardcoded?
    I've been a good little player and fought with it for a while, but it annoys me and I don't play games to be annoyed. And I don't want to have to bother with all the equally artificial solutions of exterminating cities and raising armies of peasants.

    I need a low maintenance squalor solution that the AI can't exploit. I can keep myself in check, but I don't want to create AI super-cities.

    That said, is there a way to at least just reduce the Public Order penalty from squalor? Having it slowing down population growth is fine, good even, but I can't stand having a city full of improvements revolt at low tax levels with a decent governor in it.

    If it can't be directly modded, can I at least create a building or unit that reduces squalor and/or raises public order by a bunch, and find a way to not let the AI build a bunch of them?

    Any insight would be appreciated. I know next to nothing about this particular game's modding process. Thanks!

    Try adding law bonuses at the end of say walls for example like this

    levels wooden_pallisade wooden_wall stone_wall large_stone_wall epic_stone_wall
    {
    wooden_pallisade requires factions { barbarian, carthaginian, eastern, parthia, egyptian, greek, roman, }
    {
    capability
    {
    wall_level 0
    tower_level 1
    law_bonus bonus 1
    }
    construction 1
    cost 400
    settlement_min town
    upgrades
    {
    wooden_wall
    }
    }
    wooden_wall requires factions { barbarian, carthaginian, eastern, parthia, egyptian, greek, roman, }
    {
    capability
    {
    wall_level 1
    gate_strength 1
    tower_level 1
    law_bonus bonus 2
    }
    construction 2
    cost 800
    settlement_min large_town
    upgrades
    {
    stone_wall
    }
    }
    stone_wall requires factions { spain, gauls, dacia, carthaginian, eastern, parthia, egyptian, greek, roman, }
    {
    capability
    {
    wall_level 2
    tower_level 1
    gate_defences 1
    gate_strength 1
    law_bonus bonus 3
    }
    construction 3
    cost 1600
    settlement_min city
    upgrades
    {
    large_stone_wall
    }
    }
    large_stone_wall requires factions { carthaginian, eastern, parthia, egyptian, greek, roman, }
    {
    capability
    {
    wall_level 3
    tower_level 1
    gate_defences 2
    gate_strength 2
    law_bonus bonus 4
    }
    construction 5
    cost 3200
    settlement_min large_city
    upgrades
    {
    epic_stone_wall
    }
    }
    epic_stone_wall requires factions { carthaginian, eastern, parthia, egyptian, greek, roman, }
    {
    capability
    {
    wall_level 4
    tower_level 2
    gate_defences 2
    gate_strength 2
    law_bonus bonus 5

    This wont increase population like happiness bonuses just keep them inline even if they are living in squalor.

    Okay, cool.

    As a variation of that, could I perhaps make a copy of the walls and rename them ("Happy Walls" or whatever), assigning them only to whatever faction I'm playing at the moment, to keep the computer AI from accidentally exploiting it? So they could have their normal walls and I could have my law-providing walls. Or maybe a destroyable building would be better than walls, since I wouldn't want to build Happy Walls in a captured city that already had walls, but anyway...

    Would that be fairly simple, or are there too many different files that I would have to duplicate?

    You can apply bonuses to any buildings. You could apply them to a more faction specific building like a temple. Creating a new building just for your faction to reduce squalor by adding law bonuses is quite a bit more involved.
