M2TW plays, after Kingdoms install doesn't

Hello people i'm new here and i recently installed M2TW and i played for a couple hours to test it. Everything worked fine then i installed the Kingdoms expansion which i also tried and worked fine, then when i tried to open the M2TW again it crashed saying: "Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit"

i tried reinstalling but nothing changed

For the past day i ve been searching the web and this forum for an answer about what's causing this and i found several posts about the same problem but never found a definite answer and i started getting frustrated cause i can't search every single post, that could take weeks plus i checked FAQ and didn't find what i was looking for.

After searching a suspicion came to mind but i may be way off. i've noticed about gold and non gold editions, plus patches that are "ENG" or "US" etc... is it possible that this is caused because the original M2TW and Kingdoms i've installed are different incompatible editions and how can i tell what edition is each to check it?? but if that's not the problem what is??

Did you try to start a new campaign or load a save?

DVD, original game and expansion, Gold, Steam, other?

Sorry for the delay , been kinda busy... After i double click to play a few seconds pass , i get a black screen and the message "Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit"

my version is dvd of original game and expansion separately. No gold , no steam. Oh and i have windows 7 , 32 bit in case it matters

also i tried to narrow it down as to where problem begins i thought maybe this can help you find out what's going on... I reinstalled m2tw , again played fine then begun reinstalling kingdoms. The install started by updating my 1.00 version to 1.02.001. After this finished i tried to run the game again and when i doubled clicked it started the Medieval II: Total War Launcher i clicked play and here we go again --> crash. so maybe this can help

The 1.2 patch was a bad install.
Did you do it off the Kingdoms dvd or from an online source?

i did it from the Kingdoms dvd... when i start installing the kingdoms it always starts by installing this 1.2 patch

It's supposed to. It has to install the 1.2 patch and the 1.3 patch before installing Kingdoms.

so what can i do to fix this problem??? should i try installing the patches from somewhere else?? or can i patch it after the kingdoms install with something??

Possibly a bad Kingdoms disc. Can you try to install the game on another computer?

maybe i can try it on a friend's computer... let me know if you come up with anything. i appreciate the help anyway. wish i could just make it work cause now not only i can't play m2tw but also the mods that require kingdoms too.

the irony huh??? the mods require kingdoms to work but if i install kingdoms, the m2tw and the mods don't work but kingdoms do... how's that even possible??

i found out today how i can easily identify the exact version of the game by going in the current exe file and right clicking properties-->details. i know for some this may have been obvious but i didn't know that.

anyway after i figured out what version i had , i googled to find the right patches and i am glad to report that i made m2tw and kingdoms work and played one battle in england campaign without ctd. so far so good i hope it stays that way!!!
