William de Vassy begs for an audience with the baron.
De vassey is shown into see the Baron.
The Baron talks with great coldness in his voice. His voice tells you all that you need to know about the man. He is no man of warmth or kindness.
I am afraid I have not had the pleasure of meeting you good sir. The Baron says with a smile that appears to be a warm smile until you look into his eyes and see them staring back at you taking in all that you do.
The baron reminded him of his Grandfather. A sly, cold man. A real bastard. Still, William bowed to the baron.
I am Sir William de Vassy, my lord. I have come at the behest of the king.
He nodded, and smiled
Questions relating to how you administer the land, my lord.
Certainly I am an open book when it comes to such matters to the King. However before I answer any questions could I see the Royal Seal to prove that you are indeed a representative of the King?
He paused.
The King did not equip me with such an item. However, I would be willing to wait for the king to confirm I am his agent, my lord.
He bowed his head in thanks.
You are most generous. If we may begin, my lord?
He thinks.
Are the taxes collected efficiently? Roughly how many men can you field, and would they be ready? Is there any dissident among the small folk? No signs of rebellion, my lord?
The taxes are collected the small folk complain endlessly about the level of taxes but my soldiers ensure that such talk is quickly stomped out. Sometimes I think that serfs were placed on this earth to complain. I have 500 men ready for action at any time they are a well disciplined and trained group. There is nothing I hate more then disorder so I ensure that there is none in my lands. As for talk of rebellion there is some small grumblings that I have heard but I am certain that no rebellion would cross my lands as the serfs are fully away just what I would do to them and their families should a rebellion occur.
William nods, pleased
I believe you have answered my questions in full, my lord. I believe that's all I need to know.
A letter from the king arrives.
Baron Bedford. Your absence from the army at Portsmouth has not been missed. You can be assured we will be having words about it once i return.
King Richard.
