Default Detroit High School basketball coach threatened by armed robbers shoots them (killing one)

(WXYZ) - Police sources tell 7 Action News that a women's basketball coach from Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School shot two men who attacked him as he was walking two basketball players to their cars in the school parking lot.
Police sources say the coach was walking the two girls to their cars when two men allegedly approached and one pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace. The coach then pulled out his gun and shot both of them, according to sources.
The man who shot the attackers was 70 years old, according to police.
One of the attackers was found dead in the median on Lafayette Boulevard, and the other was taken to a local hospital, according to police sources. We've learned that both of the men had attended the high school, and one had been recently expelled.
Police sources say the coach has a Concealed Pistol License and is reportedly a reserve police officer. They say he is fully cooperating with authorities.
Crime scene tape could be seen on Lafayette Boulevard and also around the back parking lot of the school near the gym.
Students could be seen being walked to their cars late Friday night

I'm sure this will cause uproar in the U.S, but as someone from the U.K - shouldn't the coach in question be acquitted almost completely? It was in self defense.

Makes you wonder what the hell is going on across the pond. Maybe I have been just been paying more attention the news or is America really going gun mad? It seems as if there is a shooting everyday.

It seems like that because the media appears to be reporting every single incident involving a gun nationwide to encourage debate on gun control.

It would seem so. I mean do you US guys know there are shootings everyday?

Surely gun control could prevent this. You don't get many shootings here in the UK (you get stabbings instead)

On this side of the pond it would have gone down differently. Nobody would have had guns. The robbers would have had knives or blunt weapons, and the coach would have been unarmed. The coach and two basketball players would not have resisted the robbery, and the robbers would have escaped and if they were smart, may never be caught.

    Which is better I wonder?

Something else I'd like to say, the robbers wouldn't have guns this side of the pond. People say gun restrictions don't prevent criminals getting guns, but they do. They curtail the amount of guns available. The most notorious organized gangs have guns, but every petty thief does not.

I don't know what to say. If you leave the house with a weapon you face the reality that you have the ability to kill, and may have to kill someone if the situation arises. Its a frightening thought. Regardless of whether its in self defense or not.

A good point. I can imagine the shock of seeing someone with a gun here in the UK, but in the US are people even bothered by seeing a firearm? In a casual context of course. For example in someone's fathers draw etc

Most petty thieves in the US don't use guns either. Generally it's the gang-affiliated ones who are 'putting in work' so they can make their 'contribution' to the gang. The difference is that there are over 30,000 organised gangs with something between 800,000 and 1,500,000 members.

Seventy times the population of the Republic with as many gang members as the entire population of the North. There are going to be more incidents.

    This is getting old.

Too ing bad for the robbers. If being shot doesn't appeal to you, don't rob people. That coach deserves a medal.

Remember kids, better rob people at gun free zones.

Either the robber is dumb or something funny happen. The robber already pull the gun and grabbed the chain necklace, but somehow the coach still can pull a gun and shoot them before they react?

I don't know why the newspaper bothered using so many codewords to imply blackness on the part of everyone involved. They could have just called them all black and been done with it.
