The free version of AVG at times has not liked Total War games and Steam.
Try it with it uninstalled. I use MSE.

I unistalled... still didn't work... until last night, for soem reason started working again :S weird.
I'm on bit defender myself.
A member reported the same problem some time back and was using Bit Defender. Bit Defender in his case was conflicting with the game.
Shame that my first post here is a plea for help, but I've got the same issue.
Running windows 8, it worked fine up till a few days ago, when it flagged up saying it's not compatible. Antivirus and firewall are disabled, uninstalled and trying to reinstall but still has the same error message.
Was kicking some serious ass on it as well.
All help is hugely appreciated.

Be sure it's installed in a folder like C:\Games, not Program Files (x86)?
I had the same issue after the windows 8 update and after un-installing and then re-installing it works for me now.
I kept in the same file path as before as well (program files (x86). I'm sure most of you have tried this but if there is anyone who hasn't tried this i would recommend it even though it's a bit of a nuisance.
After persistent crashes caused by some battlemap issue my computer (Windows 8) by itself decided to make the user area non-writeable. The problem went away by enforcing once again read and write rights, along the lines irishron suggested. It is essentially a write issue.
Windows 8 was not made for playing M2TW.
