After reading a bit of that "Headbanging gutwrenching metal!!" thread, I got to thinking: so which metal band has the most awesome lyrics? And by awesome, I mean totally badass. You could interpret that any way you want, but it doesn't necessarily have to mean gory, limb-tearing, eye-gouging, torture-table that Cannibal Corpse writes.

Now some might argue for the obvious like Slayer and Pantera, but I'll make this suggestion: Dying Fetus. And as I'll expect from all of you who post here, here is some proof to back up the claim. From the song Destroy the Opposition from the album of the same name (2000):

Who does the earth belong to?
    The human termites spreading lies.
The people have to make a decision,
but they're too busy dying to try and realize.

    Who controls their future,
and money flows above their heads.
Just give them all a chance to make contact,
and the last ones shall rise up to seek revenge.

There was a time, when the weak would suffer.
The ones in power would crush all who dissent.
Just look around, because nothing's changed.
No longer kings, they wear a suit and tie.

Those who survive, have no conviction
Just follow trends, until they're born again.
So who will live, and who will die?
It's up to us to carry on the fight.

Rising up, from the ashes to the challenge.
Face to face, it's not too late to start resisting.
All around; we have a chance to change the world.
Believe in us, tomorrow's dreams are fire in our blood.

Bred to buy, not to think.
Tell more lies, make them weak.
Nothing's real, except the mindset you've created.
To the left, avoid the path that they've been paving.

Mainstream lies, unleashed through waves that mold behavior.
We've had enough, their greedy ing system's going down.

Bred to buy, not to think.
Tell more lies, make them weak.

Without hesitation, I will kick the TV in.
Sick of all these ers with their Prozac grins.
Always selling , that no one wants or needs.
Choking up the planet with their get rich schemes.

A mediated world, what a sick reality.
Wake the up, smell the , then you will see.
What's good for them isn't good for everyone
The future starts now, for a past yet to come.

    Just ask them one question,
and they'll tell you fifteen lies.
They're Judas, Hitler, Stalin, and Brutus
    all combined.

    The world is false-constructed,
    just to satisfy their needs.
    If we keep obeying orders,
we're like lambs to the slaughter for their feast.

    Handed down, the final call.
Rise to fight, destroy them all.
    It's too late to accommodate.
The game is lost, because no one is thinking.

Born with a chance to facilitate,
The end of a time that's defined by hypocrisy.
Just like rats, they will multiply,
and run with the pack without ever seeing.

Out of the womb to be crucified,
we challenge the doctrine they've been preaching.
And I can't post this one without another worthy song from the same album, Praise the Lord (Opium of the Masses):

One by one, the young will fall, indoctrinating process growing.
Some too weak to fight at all, who controls their future?
God above, or God below, questions no one can answer.
Live the truth, or die to know, it's my agnostic vision.

Jews killing Muslims, and Christians killing Jews.
The circle is unending, and all sides always lose.
If faith is blind devotion, then death is the result.
When history is rotten, the young and pure grow dead and cold.

I don't need a book for saving, fellowship or days of praying.
Organizing means dilution, and results in persecution.
Through it all I keep a vision, understand what I believe in.
Truth is not the faith you follow, it's far more than you can ever know.

Religion, the burden we carry forth.
    Mankind, addicted--the drug spreads on.
Paranoia eats all reason, driving their crusading mission.
Zealotry from Rome to Mecca, millions more become infected.
God cannot be mass-projected, or beaten out through forced confessions.
It's for all of us to ponder, not for dogma's chains to hold us down.
Wake up, and put the past where it belongs.

Just beat them back till they are gone, 'cause their doctrines lead to misery.
They're prophets preaching fantasy, how can they hold themselves
    above the rest?

From holy birth to martyr's death, the moral quest for life beyond.
It's just a pipe dream for the paranoid, the empty words of holy books
will mislead all those that read.

Buried in the lines of text are the myths that feed their needs.
Born from flesh, just like all earth down below,
which came from a life form we can never know.
Pray for a world that only God above can save?
The church is the reason why they've lost their way.
Crusades and Inquisitions, holy wars, Jihad,
they are the willing victims of a grand facade.

Above it all, the lies are told. The masses follow without question.
First to die, or last to go, I know my convictions.
Flesh and blood, and spirit life, the trinity of my perception.
Dead awake, or sleeping dead, we will find out in the end.

    10. A Question Of Heaven

    [music\lyrics - Schaffer]

The time is close now, the end is near
My walk through the valley, trails of fear
I feel empty, my penance overdue,
I guess it's too late now to be with you
I'm extremely frightened of what will surely be
I sold myself, the death of me
I know you can't forgive me I know I'm on my own,
I've betrayed you I walk alone

What exactly is the meaning of this
Just pawns in your twisted game
Severe pain for the lie I'm livin'
For a love I never could betray

    [Bridge]
Question me not say the lord unto thee
You have chosen your own fate and your own destiny
Denied of this life is what you are to be
You have chosen your own fate and your own destiny

Lord I pound my fists at you
Won't you just let me die
    Would I not suffer enough
No inner peace no after life

    [Repeat Bridge]

I did what I thought was right
All for the love of my life
I know it's sad but true
    Something is very wrong
    Condemned to suffer so long
    For a love so true

    The question that lies within
    Is so hard to understand
    It still tears at me
    And in my dying breath
    My heart holds no regrets
    I wouldn't change a thing

My spirit begins to rise to the heavenly skies
Just to be shunned away by you
Now all I want is to die, no streets of gold in the sky
And I wash my hands of you

    [Bridge]
    Rising to the heaven's light
    Just to plead for death
    Just to be denied

    Rising to the heaven's light
    Just to plead for death
    Just to be denied

Ooohhh, I know you can't forgive me
I know I'm on my own
I know that I've betrayed you
    You know I walk alone
    You know I walk alone

I walk, I walk the trail of fear
I pound my fists at you
    I'm shunned away by you
I wash my hands of you

Why won't you let me die
Why won't you let me die
Why won't you let me die

    5. Names

To stars and suns we carry
    To superhumans names in stone
Into the depths of seas of grand desires
To the thought pure, into nothingness
Limitless solitude without numbers and names
Where names a curse no longer are
The ideal one- the true number of man
The sick stench of crowded dogs
    With their eyes closed
That are looking into others for gods
    Rotting millions keeping guard
Of their own truths which you cannot see
A many-headed worm of names uncounted
Is eating its tail in wretched self-hatred
Blinded millions on the road to death
The hunger of self-destruction always defeats
    Raise your gaze- you can't
You won't- it's easier to follow the herd
You suck on an empty bag of words
You fulfill yourself in a cage
    Of your own blindness
Carry me, my wings of hatred
Above the fear of knowing all other
I want to see my very own death

    3. As The Vortex Illumines The Crystalline Walls Of Kor-Avul-Thaa

Kor-Avul-Thaa... finest jewel in the crown of a realm of sublime glory,
greatest city in the Middle Kingdoms, mayhap all the world... Its splendid
walls of shimmering crystal could be seen from a hundred leagues distant,
kissed by the golden rays of the sun, or caressed by the ethereal fingers of a
midnight moon. Its magnificent spires and citadels, built by generations of
kings from the resplendent gifts hewn from the ancient bosom of the sacred
Crystal Mountains, had oft' times been the bitter envy of rival emperors, and
many were the sieges which Kor-Avul-Thaa had withstood and repulsed over the
centuries, for powerful sorcerers did weave great spells of protection about
the dazzling towers, and none may have passed unbidden through the vast
sapphir ean gates of mighty Kor-Avul-Thaa...

From the Journals of Sage Daelun

    [The Oracle of Kor-Avul-Thaa:]
The sky rent asunder... black-winged devils surge forth from the void...
A maelstrom of crimson fire burns above us... what carnage has thou wrought?
Not sword, ballistae, nor burning brand
Could e'er these walls aspire to breach,
Yet now the city's fall is nigh,
As elder rites black fiends unleash.

High Lord of the Brotherhood of Dark Elucidation (Keepers of the
Forbidden Books of the First Cataclysm): By Klatrymadon and Zuranthus, such
ancient secrets we discovered within these sinistrous, worm-worn pages,
Etched with darksome glyphs and sigils, bound with fearsome spells, An
eldritch tide of stygian sorceries unfettered by the forbidden Tome of
    Shadows...

Now thunderous cataclysm befalls the gleaming Kor-Avul-Thaa (The mystic
gate stands open!) The Xytaxehedron held to the stars... the incantation
uttered with eager tongues... (What long-shackled powers of the elder dark
    have our conjurings loosed?)

By Klatrymadon and Zuranthus, the vortex blackens the stars above,
A vast plague of amorphous horrors descends to rend with fang and talon,
(As with torrents of blood the crystalline walls run red?)
And in the glooming chambers of our shadowed sanctum, we wait, half-mad with
    terror,
To reap the slaughterous harvest which we have sown...

    [The Chronicler of the Cataclysm:]
And beyond the vortex, the churning black waters of the void did disgorge the
    Dwellers in Eternal Shadow,
And upon a horde of winged horrors, brandishing swords of ebon flame, they
    rode out from the Gate...
And a terrible silence fell upon Kor-Avul-Thaa...

    [The Echoes of the Oracle:]
The sky rent asunder, black winged devils surge forth from the void...
A maelstrom of crimson fire burns above us... what carnage has thou wrought?

    [The Chronicler of the Cataclysm:]
The Chronicles of Time speak of only two other instances when the sky did
split wide and bleed forth such a torrent of horror as that which assailed
Kor-Avul-Thaa... One of those times was the fateful eve when the moon burned
black over ancient Lemuria, as a legion of ravening fiends emerged from the
Outer Darkness to visit catastrophe upon that realm... And the other... the
other manifestation of such a staggering cosmic evil is recorded only in the
ancient Scrolls of the Third Circle, a dark collectio n of terrifying
blasphemies which was believed to have been burned by the Order of Kl'aa at
roughly the same time as the first Tome of Shadows was discovered deep within
the Black Pyramid... These scrolls speak disturbingly of visitations to our
earth by creatures from a terrible place known as the Black Galaxy...
creatures which were able to span the vast expanses of time and space
separating our world from theirs in their great dark chariots, bringing
pestilence and carnage whenever they set foot upon the earth... And yet, the
scrolls also speak of the Others, known by some ancient, long-dead tribes as
the Travelling Ones... beings who did stand against the denizens of the Black
Galaxy and wage war with them across the nighted void. It is said that t he
Travelling Ones sailed the star-seas in huge silvern spheres ringed with a
myriad pulsing lights, and that in a great battle they drove their shadowy
foes back to the Black Galaxy... but at a great cost... The Travelling Ones
were drained of their cos mic powers and cast into a deep slumber, and some
say that they remain here still, hidden in mysterious, secret places, awaiting
the time of their reawakening. It was ascertained by those mages who found the
Tome of Shadows that certain gateways existed linking our world and the Black
Galaxy, just as maps carved into the stone walls of ancient tombs displayed
the pathway to the terrifying realm through the eternal blackness of the
void... and within the sinister pages of the dread book were the arcane k
eys... the rites to open wide these gates and give the dark wanderers beyond
the freedom to roam the earth once again... And the darkling lords did descend
upon Kor-Avul-Thaa to claim their splendid prize, and enthrone themselves
    within the glittering walls...

    [The Echoes of the Oracle:]
Not sword, ballistae, nor burning brand
Could e'er these walls aspire to breach,
Yet now the city's fall is nigh,
As elder rites black fiends unleash...

    [The Brotherhood:]
By Klatrymadon and Zuranthus, in Kor-Avuk-Thaa, darkness reigns eternal...
Nevermore shall the city glimmer, for now the crystalline walls gleam black...
    Ever black...

And so it was that the bedazzling and splendid Kor-Avul-Thaa did become
the City of Shadows, a sinister fortress of elder fiends and fearsome beasts,
unleashed by the meddlings of mortals aspiring to dark thresholds of forbidden
knowledge and arcane powe r, a nightmare city shunned and feared by all. And
not since the sinking of Atlantis was the fall of a realm so sorely
    lamented...

I'm submerged in filth, fragmented chaos
In chrysalis state i await my birth
Thoughts and memories proceed to haunt me

    Morphing begins
    I'm becoming a god

Birth is nothing but death's beginning

Now as my soul is yearning
    Morph to new paradigms
    Find wisdom in the learning
My will always finds a way
    See the embers burning
    Sense no dividing line
    Same being, dead or living
    My will burns through time

Was it everything they told you?
Was it all the things they promised you?
Was it everything they told you?
Was it everything they said it would be?

Strange things move in the corner of my eyes
And the sky never looked so white and pretty
Tiny figures crawl upon my sterile flesh
There's a hole in the world, and it keeps getting bigger

Was it everything you hoped for?
Was it all the things you prayed for?
Was it everything you hoped for?
Was it everything you thought it would be?

    How can you love it...
    How can you believe it...
    How can you need it...
    When there's nothing there?
In space where the stars are dead now
The man in the moon still has a wicked face
But the more you reach for the heavens above
The more you'll hate your own pitiful love

Like a river flowing around me... Mirror's paradise
Pulling me in it's wake... Mirror's paradise

    How can you love it...
    How can you believe it...
    How can you need it...
    When there's nothing there?
I want to show you something so much better
I'll make the world seem a little bit deader
You smile... but it's all despair
You love... but there's nothing there

    [Music:Mårten Hagström; Lyric:Mårten Hagström]

Subdued and repressed. A son of the vortex in faceless progress, coaxing, tugging, grinding. So elevated so God.
Refit this vessel of confusion to bring the eloquence of the mute.
Incorporate this forfeit cause, assimilate and fake it mine.
I bow my head and taste the lies that I'm fed, all to claim my reward.
Master and servant. One for all and all for none. Ignorant to the distant hymns of chaos,
the progressive stand before me. Their eyes fixed in the distance, default to conform to the new.

They animate me. In confidence I thrive. My reign: supremacy. I speak no word unheard.
Re-motivate me. I'm all there is to be. An omnipotent being so complete in my diversity.

Ripples race across my eyes. Breaking out in acid sweat. Wills shrivel and crack.
Disintegration of my inner self. I find the substance lost. A shed shell of a being of disgust.
Done is the cleansing. Complete is the surgery of the soul.

Step inside and taste the shackling thoughts that devour all confidence. Realizing I'm lost.
Being no more than a mutt with a fake pedigree. Stillborn soul shaped and molded.
I can live an eternity in a minute's time. A borrowed talent filled with copied goals.
The carcass of hope lies dead beneath the fabric of dreams. Facing the truth within the mirror of souls -
ha ha this is what I've become. Always been in this emancipated state. Submerged, battered and numb. Just a mindscape fit for illusion to make fear into reign and fulfillment of pain. Kneeling in perm
The minions of the inside claim me

Re-animate, me cause I was once alive. Defeat smears out my focus. Consciousness subsides
Unmotivated. Beheld by scorching eyes. Infinity stares back at me. The surging darkness coils to strike.

Not true of hip hop groups like Jurassic 5, who simply create excellent music with often eloquent lyrics that if he were alive today Pushkin might even nod to. Just as an example, their song The Thin Line dealing with the difficulties of staying friends with women you've had romantic relationship with and still have strong feelings for:

    "Thin Line"
    (feat. Nelly Furtado)

    [Chali 2na]
Yo, this is a lesson in friendship
    The depths of a kinship
What women and men begin with, and then slip
    My pen drips
As I scribble my thoughts on thin strips
    Of emotion
    A fraction, seduction, attraction
    Eruption of passion
Corrupts if a lasted friendship's involved
But love to cross the line
But that's why we built these walls

    [Hook: Nelly Furtado]
We been friends for a long time, a very close friend of mine
Love you like you was mine, but respect a thin line
I love you like you was mine, think about you all the time
Very close friend of mine, but respect a thin line

    [Akil]
    Opposite's attract
When the female and male come in contact
    Sticky situation in fact
Tryin not to let the feelings catch
But there's a thin line between both of y'all
    So you respect that
And entertain the idea, but get brought back
To reality, and could you really live with that?
    Decision, based on intuition
You love and keep your distance
    Hug and kiss in friendship

    [Marc 7]
An ongoing kinship, we was people to begin with
    Disrespect was not intended
but your feelings sparked the sentence
Sometimes you're too intense in your quest to invent
The perfect man, please understand, my rhyme is your repent

    [Soup]
Man, too bad that we became friends first
I'm not on expert on how relationships should work
But, (echos) from the minute it as known
It changed the whole tone on how we spoke on the phone
Yo, it was cool but I felt it wasn't enough
And I was stuck when your moms would pick it up
Over you, all my buddies would swoon
But I felt we were in tune, you let me up in your room. (Damn)
But to me girl, you're still off limits
No matter all the times that I hinted. (Yo, whatchu doin after this?)
Infactuation was authentic, but yo I just pretended
So I wouldn't lose the friendship
Maybe, I should spill all my guts
Or write a letter, then tear it up
Or do a song, just to say what's up
    I want ... just ... a touch

    [Nelly Furtado]
    I can't do this anymore
See my heart just falls out when you walk in the door
Friendship turns into lust and this only tip
That I can't comprehend even if I knew it
Can't do justice to these things that I'm feeling
You got someone else, don't wanna be caught stealing
Hell if she knew she would never leave us alone
    in the roo-ooo-ooom

    [Chali 2na]
This was a lesson in friendship
    I stress in this sentence
Should women and men be friends first?
    And then slip?
My pen drips as I scribble my thoughts on thin strips
    of devotion

    [Akil]
    Opposites attract
And best friends make a perfect match
    If you only knew that
Once you cross, ain't no turning back
The minute you let him in it and he hit that
    That's that

    [Marc 7]
We was people to begin with, but you was too relentless
    Jeporidizing kinship, respect is intended
    Resolve is my intent
    While we got it in
I'm tryin to salvage a friendship

Skyclad, of course, and anything involving Martin Walkyer. The guy takes witty into a whole new dimension. Off the top of my head, check titles:

    Prince of the Poverty Line
Great Blow for a Day Job
    Thinking Allowed?
    History Lessens
    Vintage Whine
    Land of the Rising Slum
    Badtime Story
    Cancer of the Heart

I also absolutely love Greek black metal from the 90s, lyrics heavily influenced by Lovecraft's work and occultism and music fitting with it perfectly.

The Forest of N'ghai, The Fifth Illusion (my favourite song ever), Unholy Funeral, Exiled Archangel, Les Litanies de Satan (inspired by Baudelaire's poem), Mystic Places of Dawn, Esoptron, Down at the Valley of the Great Encounter, In the Garden of the Unearthly Delights, Where Mortals Have no Pride, Deep Beneath an Ancient Dominion, Crossing the Fiery Path, Dawn of Martyrdom etc

Omen's "Be My Wench" and various stuff from 80's WASP are a must before going out at a date, it gets you very ...hm... confident about your sexiness and focused on what you hope to accomplish, haha.

Finally, American punk rock and anything that destroys your braincells while amplifying the adrenaline rush is essential before and while mtbiking downhill. My favourite song from this perspective is 'Boy Sets Fire" by Rookie.

God no. Absolutely no. While their music is decent and they have written some classic songs, their lyrics are amongst the most uninspired and repetitive ever. "Hail hail to England, hail hail hail" LOL Or "We are the kings of metal, coming to town!" LOL^2.
In general I hate the whole 'we true metal fans and/or musicians are a big family/community/the best/the toughest/the truest/against mainstream and posers/etc' or the "stay true/heavy/underground, keep the (black) flame alive etc' cliches. Any more cheesy than that and you die.

"Blessed is he who learns how to engage in inquiry, with no impulse to hurt his countrymen or to pursue wrongful actions, but perceives the order of the immortal and ageless nature, how it is structured."
    Euripides

"This is the disease of curiosity. It is this which drives to try and discover the secrets of nature, those secrets which are beyond our understanding, which avails us nothing and which man should not wish to learn."
    Augustine

Well, that may be true, but look the lyrics that talk about motivation, strength, such as Heart of Steel, I Believe, Sons of Odin, Defender.

Nice. If you're looking for more hilarious song titles and lyrics, you should also take a look at bands like Rattler, Stormtroopers of Death, and Municipal Waste. For example:

Rattler: Cocaine Migraine, Drink and Destroy, Blood Sweat and Beers
Stormtroopers of Death: Speak English or Die, Pre-Menstrual Princess Blues, the Middle East
Municipal Waste: Wrath of the Severed Head, Wolves of Chernobyl, Acid Sentence, ADD (Attention Deficit Destroyer)

    Good stuff.

    Sabaton's Swedish Album.

Personally I cannot stand when metal bands try to teach me about Politics. I let my university Professors do that.

Otherwise Iron Maidens newer albums tend to have pretty good lyrics.

Well, the Swedish version of Carolus Rex is all kinds of awesome.

Vilja tit lýða og ljóð geva mær, eg bróti av bragdartátti
Kongur ráddi for Nøríki, hann tógva synir átti

    Rennur og rennur foli mín
Grønari grund og vín bar reyða lund
    Stíg at dansa stund

So er tann maður, í víggi stendur, næstan tolir deyð

Frúgvin var bæði studd og leidd, inn í sín faðirs veldi
Ljómin skein av akslagrein, tað skyggir av tignareldi

Nú er hetta kvæðið endað, tað man góðum gegna
Torstein tók við ríkjunum báðum so við hvørju tegna

I have loads of hip-hop albums, none of the lyrics are like that.

I also have tons of metal albums, the lyrics are often cheesy crap.

To me that is also ignorant and I advice you to check out more those bands before criticizing them .
Death metal alone is a huge subgenre with a immense variety of themes in lyrics . The most common is horror or gore or both though .
