yeah the first time i faced the balrog, they completely destroyed my army. The second time i was able to rout ost of the enemy before focusing down the balrog
yep. they attacked Cerin Armoth but u killed them with my archers...sadly I had no arrows left to kill the following goblins Q.Q
I've killed the Balrogs twice: Once in a sally forth from Moria, and once in a battle next to Moria. But in both cases I had Dúnedain, Greenway and Merchants. In the latter battle my ballista killed one of them.
Btw, funny name for the thread!

Try and hit them with heavy siege engines, catapults, ballistas
I fought them in moria, i focuses 100% on them than other units, it took a good [no great] 30 minutes to beat them but I did first try, epic battle it was. It was scary to see them from a distance at first in moria center.
I am playing Mirkwood Elves in MoS on medium battle difficulty with Allied Aid script on. An invasion was called on Edoras and my reinforcements arrived just in time to find a big stack of Misty Mountain Orcs besieging Edoras. I placed my army next to them and when the full stack of Rohirrim sallied out to meet the Orcs, I joined the battle. That's when I saw they had the Balrog(s) with them.
Since I came up behind the orcs, I chose to focus on the enemy general first and try to rout their rabble as soon as possible. My Elven archers and elite infantry made short work of the orcish scum while the Rohirrim were occupied with the Balrog. Before long, the enemy general had been slain by my infantry and their army was routing, except of course the Balrogs, who were slaying the men of Rohan by the dozen. As soon as the orcs had run off, I turned and sent my infantry after the Balrog. I deliberately left my archers out of the battle, since their arrows would only hurt my own troops. Rohan still had a fair bit of infantry and some cavalry left and to my surprise, the Balrogs went down pretty smoothly, one by one, until none remained standing and our combined armies were victorious!
I guess the key here was that the Balrogs had already gained plenty of hits by the fight against the Rohan army and when my forces finally joined them, it was just too much. Perhaps it is best to keep these troops occupied as long as possible but focus on routing the remaining army first. Then, when the rest is gone and they have already been hit plenty of times, they will go down one by one to the rest of your army.
Although the best strategy is of course: hit them with ballistas or catapults.

What size units makes characters like Sauron and the Balrog be single character? I've heard it was small but also large, anyone know which one? I'd like to play a campaign and it'll annoy me if i get to moria and there's ten BalrogsBut also i want to have the largest unit size possible.
Were there but a tree in this godforsaken place i would have hanged myself.
A combination of elephant class and "soldiers 1" in the spawn. Here's the tutorial: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=547972
The Balrog that appears due to garrison script is not "spawned" that way which is why it isn't a single soldier unit.
Not size, a mod. Look in submod section.
On the numerous VH/VH Dwarf campaigns I've started, I've always got as far as taking Moria. The Balrogs are pretty simple as long as you have sturdy melee troops, just surround them and wait for about half an hour for them to finally die.
I also took Moria once with the Silvan Elves on VH/VH, it was the same deal then too (using Forest Wardens) but the assistence with missile fire was always nice.
My game last night bugged and the Balrog was awakened when I attacked Ost-in-Edhil as FPOE. So out of Moria comes the balrog with 3/4 stack at his back (including 3 troll units). We fight a big field battle, and I am cavalry heavy so I am kiting around the balrogs with Aragorn while Gandalf and a bunch of merchants are charge blasting the rest of his army from different angles. Eventually I rout just about all of his regular troops, so it's just the Balrog and 2 troll units left. I withdraw, hoping that with such a small stack he will go home. After my retreat it says "enemy army routs". Lamest balrog kill ever.
Would it be possible to change the spawn script to incorporate this? Or is it because he spawns within the city that makes it not workable?

The latter. Garrison script uses create_unit not spawn_army so there's no opportunity to use the "soldiers 1" parameter.
Interesting, though i wouldn't be against having the army of the Balrog spawn outside the city. Perhaps have it spawn the next turn and besiege moria which would be more dangerous imo since if you get trapped in the citySomething to think about anyway.

The Balrog is a pain in the arse. But nothing more then that if you do it right.![]()
Quoting Dutch Balrog: (The Balrog is a pain in the Ar*e!!!) Well I would say it should be that at least its a flippin BALROG ffs!I was once beseiged by the big B and a full stack of trolls in the border town between Fornost and Imladris and it came out of nowhere...that was back in version 3.0 mind and surfice to say that didn't go very well! Iv stuffed the one unit Balrog in 3.2 a number of times tho!

I've taken down the Balrog horde as both Silvan Elves and Eriador in my time. Sadly, the most effective method I've found is to just drown them in the bodies of waves of cheap spearmen. Eventually after hundreds of spearmen bravely sacrifice themselves upon their flaming swords, the Balrogs will tire out and just fall down to take a nap.
Seriously though, I just overwhelm them with spearmen and any armor-piercing (ie axemen) units I have. All the while shooting them with archers until I run out of arrows. You will lose half a stack of units in the exchange but it's worth it and they will go down.
A Dutch Balrog on the other hand...
;-)
My first battle against a Balrog went quite well. They had 2 or 3 battalions of trolls but my ragtag team from eriador managed to kill them off.
In the end it was just all my units in the Balrogs.
