Is there any real benefit in using Xp pro over Xp home edition? I've been using Xp home since Xp came out and have nothing to compare it against.

2 big things, Home does not support multiprocessing, thus will not benifit from dual core cpus. The 2nd thing is that XP home cannot be joined to a domain, which for home users is fine, but it makes the OS totally unsuitable for a corporate environment.

I believe Home supports Dual Core(x2, Pentium D...etc) but only 1 socket while Pro supports 2 or more sockets with dual cores.
Dual core chips are still Identified as 2 separate CPU'sOriginally Posted by SweetDreamz

If you have the option you should go with XP Pro. Basically for me the reasoning is that I will not be getting Vista, Micro$oft's new OS, anytime soon. Last I heard Vista was coming out in February but will probably have big security holes for at least a year.
Since XP Pro is the latest relatively common OS from Micro$oft it will probably be supported longer than XP Home.
Just my opinion and won't matter if you plan to upgrade to Vista when it is released.
What are everyone’s thoughts on XP pro 64? I prolly wont build a new PC till late this year (around x-mas) or early next year (jan-feb). I prolly wont upgrade to vista until a year or so after it's release, or until I can't stand XP anymore.. lol ... but I will be vista ready with my new build.
What a crappy name for an OS… vista.. someone at M$ is on dope big time.
don't go for 64 bit.
Almost all C++ programmer makes use of the Windows32 API and iirc, 64 doesn't support it too well.
It really isn't worth the hassle.

kk thanks.
Well, judging by the fact that windows ME is still supported (at least, I think it is), there is no worries that XP home is going to be cut soon.
It is... Windows 98 just lost support on July 11th...
6 years after the new version of the windows is released. If I can use any computer for 6 years, I will be happy.
Just get what is cheaper. Or if you are priating, then saying anything will get me banned.
I'm merely interested, as some of the computer that I have worked with have corporate version of Windows XP Professional while I have the standard version of it.Originally Posted by Lee1026

EDIT: That is why I asked about differences, I have the standard version of the Windows XP Professional, but I was wondering what features corporate version does have.
Ah, well, then, I can tell you that there are no real difference. It is mainly in the lisencing business.
