Iran publicly executes two men after they posted YouTube clip of themselves committing an armed robbery

They were tried through YouTube and hanged by remote control as hundreds captured their agonising last moments on mobile phones.
But though the deaths of Alireza Mafiha and Mohammad Ali Sarvari had all the accoutrements of the 21st century, the essence of their executions was medieval.
The pair, executed for robbery, were paraded before a baying crowd of 300 in a public park at the centre of the Iranian capital, Tehran.

So is this just plain barbaric?
On the other hand, the evidence is conclusive as it seems so one could argue this is much less barbaric than executing someone without conclusive evidence as has happened in the USA for example.

If the state's going to execute it's citizens for their activities I think it's more civilized for people to be made aware of it. Public record and all that. No one has to watch it, but if it's going on we shouldn't be sheltered from it.

IMO armed robbery is (even if no physical injuries are inflicted) basically the equivalent of attempted murder, the threat and intent is there, but not the outcome of death. Theft and robbery are quite different things. I think that execution is a stretch, but it's not as outrageous as it could be. I'm not endorsing the Iranian law as a whole, but pirates and highwaymen should risk hanging for this stuff.

The laws should be tough and then it's up to the specific instance to determine mitigation and softening.

My rule of thumb is thus: If a reasonable victim would be permitted to use lethal force to stop the crime than it's only reasonable for the state to use a similar standard. I'm of the thought that the role of the court is to act on behalf of the victim.

I agree. It shows the effect of what can happen. "You want to murder, steal or rob someone. Well here is what will happen." It not only breeds fear but keeps them in line.
