    Default Favorite Hymn?

    What is your favorite hymn? I know this may sound a little narrow, but I am not just looking at lyrics but also musical arrangment. I'm sure that many of us have heard at least a couple in our lifetimes. This can also include music from any religion.

    Mine are:
    Amazing Grace, written originally by a slave ship captain who later converted to Christianity. Esp. like to hear it with the bagpipes.

    Be Thou My Vision, I just like it, good music, good lyrics.

    What are yours?

    To Moderator: Not sure if this is more cultural or not, put it in this forum due to the religious aspect.

    The years of torture... staring at the grainy projections... the mandatory goldfish impressions... the cheery pianist..

    This hymn is easily the most effective known form of torture to man - a lyrical chinese drip torture. Still, by far my favourite.

    "Truth springs from argument amongst friends." - Hume.

    Not quite a hymn, but "Der Voghormya" (Lord have mercy). If you've ever heard that instrumental part at the end of "Aerials" by System of a down, you know the tune. It starts after the druming part starts.

    At the moment I'm particularly fond of the Cherubic Hymn as sung by the Mount Lebanon Choir.

    However, from Western tradition, I'd say that (despite its English Patriotism) I'd choose 'Jerusalem' as my favourite hymn. It's memorable, has a good tune, and what's more, it mixes Christianity and Socialism in a delightful way.

    Does this count?

    The Battle Hymn of the Republic

    Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
    He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
    His truth is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

    I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
    They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
    I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
    His day is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.

    I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel;
    “As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”;
    Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
    Since God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on.

    He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
    He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
    Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
    Our God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

    In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
    With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
    As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free;
    [originally …let us die to make men free]
    While God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.

    He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
    He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
    So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,
    Our God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

    Never a more stirring song than this.

    On second thought maybe this one

    The Marine Corps Hymn

    From the Halls of Montezuma
    To the Shores of Tripoli;
    We fight our country's battles
    In the air, on land and sea;
    First to fight for right and freedom
    And to keep our honor clean;
    We are proud to claim the title
    of United States Marine.

    Our flag's unfurled to every breeze
    From dawn to setting sun;
    We have fought in ev'ry clime and place
    Where we could take a gun;
    In the snow of far-off Northern lands
    And in sunny tropic scenes;
    You will find us always on the job--
    The United States Marines.

    Here's health to you and to our Corps
    Which we are proud to serve
    In many a strife we've fought for life
    And never lost our nerve;
    If the Army and the Navy
    Ever look on Heaven's scenes;
    They will find the streets are guarded
    By United States Marines.

    Not very religous though

    And that last part in bold goes for all you who make it there.

    Apologies for the MIDI!

    Be Still, My Soul (link includes audio, lyrics and info) - Jean Sibelius's music is wonderful!

    O Holy Night (link includes audio, lyrics and info) - first music ever broadcast on radio (?)

    Perhaps the latter's filename might have been more appropriately named

    Ohh boy do i love singing at church because nobody else can hear my disturbing voice amongst the voices of the mass. My all time favorite is, "Lord I lift your name on high", but I also love 'Amazing Grace', i sound so bad singing that one...but its a classic!

    Man, I love hymns but I haven't been to a church where we sing a lot of hymns in awhile. Some come to mind,

    Oh Come All Ye Faithful
    Be Still, My Soul (one of my favorites)
    A Mighty Fortress
    Holy, Holy, Holy
    Take My Life And Let It Be
    Jesu, Joy Of Men's Desiring (probably the best ever)
    Be Thou My Vision

    Ok, that is all I have for now.
