Default FotS: More Than Half The Units Do Not Fight?

So, with rifle units only the front line will fire before you get the kneel down ability. And it is physically impossible to tell an entire unit to spread into 1 single line (some men will ALWAYS stand in the back).

So you're really supposed to play through the campaign with HALF of your men just standing and observing the fight? Doing absolutely nothing while their friends die all around them?

I mean if you're going to try out a new era at least think through and don't completely half-ass it. Instead you have men sprinting into a formation just to stand idle and wait to get stabbed. This game is an absolute embarrassment.

Put your rifle units into two lines. You need to practice a little more, and you will learn how rifle units work.

If they are evenly spread into 2 lines then half of them wont fire. You can get the kneel down ability but that's very late into the campaign, so you're going to spend a majority of the running around with dead weight.

It is also impossible to spread units into a single line, and you will ALWAYS have units standing idle doing nothing. It's just a design choice.

You have to learn how to micromanage your units once you get a couple of more TW miles on you this wont bother you.

it has absolutely nothing to do with micromanagement, not even a little bit

in fact, I wish I did have the ability to micromanage such a feature because the choice that has been made for me is completely retarded

Yeah it is kinda stupid when you think about it

Realistically, all soldiers started firing when they could if there was no "fire by rank/file" going on

The original poster does not realize that TW games are graphical window dressing to stats and chance game - it's not CoD where direct actions and interaction of graphical representations actually affect the gameplay...

Spreading riflemen single line... Gee wiz!

Besides, the longer you spread out your army, the more vulnerable you are since the enemy could concentrate their entire force on one flank and push through so sometimes its good to have men in reserve to hold the line.

Also, if you spread them thin, you'll soon have big gaps between your units because you'll be losing men to fire from the opposite side. If you have reserves in the back ranks those will fill the gaps maintaining your line. If you have spread your units thin, gaps will soon form between your units.

If you play on small unit sizes you can make them into a single line, but it would hurt balance and possibly immersion.

And why are they standing up? Jesus, either crouch or prone already, that also makes your crosshair smaller!

Why this stupid marching and then standing still, just bunny jump already and strafe to dodge enemy bullets.

I like it when people make snarky comments. It makes them look extremely stupid when you read the thread.

If it really is that big a deal for you, just mod it so that all ranks can fire

    I agree with OP

Why the back line soldiers won't fire, and thus AI never use 'kneel fire' or 'fire by rank' I don't know why not

All I can think is when you fighting enemies, frontline soldiers will die from firing then backline will immediately replace the front? so its make constant volley of fire? I don't know but I don't like it too :/

However, gunplay will be end here, because Rome 2 will don't have gun anymore
Its easy to make war with others, its never been easy when we need a peace.

    I'd blame 15th/16th/17th/18th/19th century warfare.

17, 18th, and 19th century warfare involved the use of multiple ranks firing as is evident by Ming musketeer illustrations from the 17th century.

Because what we need is for guns to be even MORE overpowering against melee troops then they already are. A long line of troops does a lot of killing, but it also makes it extremely easy to break through them.

The first two ranks should always be firing. There's really no reason that they aren't.
