    Default AI took Kyoto

Something interesting happen today, my best ally Date that is suppose to see me through realm divide captured kyoto.. surprised by this and had to do the inevitable.

Reloaded an earlier save and play awhile, and again before i could capture kyoto i received a notice that Chosokabe has been declared shogun! didn thought this would happen in the game. Game still go on though but at least chosokabe isn my ally.

Yes this can happen but it is pretty rare. Because of the strong armies in Kyoto the AI usually prefer to attack other provinces.

I've seen the AI become shogun a few times. Rare, but it does happen.

What's annoying is that AI NEVER gets realm divide, even when they become Shogun.

One time I was playing and the Takeda (AI) got realm divide, but I still got the diplomacy handicap, super annoying but also pretty cool.

I think I got once before, Shogun order me to attack Oda when they captured so many provinces and I think at that point all everyone was enemy of Oda. Its not really realms divide but at least there still resistance when some clan too much powerful.
Its easy to make war with others, its never been easy when we need a peace.

Seen this a fair few times now, it's nearly always Oda in my games though I've seen Takeda/Chosokabe/Hattori take it too. Has anyone ever seen a minor clan take Kyoto? Not even sure they're coded to attempt it, though it would be great to see.

I have. Far back I played a defensive Shmiazu Campaign. There were only three clans; me and two minor clans, all allied. I ruled Kyushu and Shikoku, another central Honshu (the Shogunate) and the last one from Kanto to the north.

Once (my first campaigns, it was either Mori or Shimazu) I received a message from the Shogun. It was something like "This clan has ascended to high power and now threatens all of Japan, for this reason the Shogun now authorizes action against this clan". If I recall correctly, it was the Hojo, Date or Takeda and it had 20 something provinces, or more. In 40 turns it was wiped by neighbors and emergent clans, it seemed everyone declared war.

It would be better if it happened because it is the victory conditions for all clans. Back in M2TW and RTW and even in ETW faction actually tried to get their victory condition but in S2TW they just seem contents with conquering half of japan and bullying every other clan.

As CptAustus said you will get a mission when a clan grows too powerful. It gives you a boost to diplomatic relations and reduces your administration costs if you take a province from the target clan. I don't know if the other clans will target them though.

The Nobunaga way: allow others to attack Kyoto and then when everyone is weak enough just walk in there. Tokugawa Ieyasu saw many become Shogun and that didn't help worth crap so just build up, instigate proxy wars, and the opportunistically attack.

I've had clans become Shogun on easy.

OP, are you using any mods? I think Radious mods might make this more likely, as the other clans can get bigger armies than the Shogun.

The first Shogun 2 campaign I played, Ikko Ikki took Kyoto and turned into the Ikko Ikki Shogunate, which was quite interesting.
